Lakshmana Tirtha River: A tributary of Kaveri dries up: 19 April 2024

Lakshmana Tirtha River:

  • Location: Tributary of the Kaveri River in Karnataka.
  • Origin: Begins in the Brahmagiri hills, Kodagu (Coorg) District, Karnataka.
  • Course: Flows eastward, joining the Kaveri River in the Krishna Raja Sagara Lake.
  • Length: Approximately 180 km.
  • Notable Feature: Lakshmana Tirtha Falls (Irupu Falls), a popular freshwater cascade located on the river bordering Kerala, en route to Nagarhole National Park.

Kaveri River:

  • Sacred Status: Considered a holy river by Hindus.
  • Origin: Rises at Talakaveri on the Brahmagiri range near Cherangala village, Kodagu district, Karnataka, at an elevation of 1,341 meters.
  • Course: Flows into the Bay of Bengal at Poompuhar, in the Mayiladuthurai district of Tamil Nadu.
  • Basin Extent: Spans Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry.
  • Geographical Features: Bounded by the Western Ghats on the west, the Eastern Ghats on the east and south, and ridges that separate it from the Krishna and Pennar basins on the north.
  • Tributaries:
    • Left Bank: Harangi, Hemavati, Shimsha, Arkavati.
    • Right Bank: Lakshmantirtha, Kabbani, Suvarnavati, Bhavani, Noyil, Amaravati.
