The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched its Artemis I moon mission as a part of the Artemis Program.
Earlier, two scheduled launches were scrubbed due to the detection of technical issues during the countdown.
Key Points:
About the Artemis Mission
It is named after the twin sister of Apollo from Greek mythology.
Artemis is also the goddess of the moon.
Aim of the Mission:With the Artemis programme, NASA aims to land humans on the moon by 2024.
Other space agencies involved in the Artemis programme:
Canadian Space Agency
European Space Agency
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency
Artemis Mission 1:
It is an uncrewed space mission where the Orion spacecraft was launched by the Space System (SLS).
Artemis 1 is headed to the Moon with Orion Spacecraft on board are three dummies that mimic astronauts.
Objective: To carry out the test ahead of the future manned missions to the Moon and beyond.
The Orion space capsule will complete a 25-day lunar Orbiter mission before falling down in the Pacific Ocean.
Launch vehicle: Space Launch System (SLS) vehicle
Significance:
It will work towards extracting the resources found on the Moon and harness hydrogen or helium as energy source.
Biology experiments will be carried out, and the impact of deep space atmosphere on humans will be investigated through the effect on dummy ‘passengers’ on board Orion.
