Top 5 Dams In Himachal Pradesh

  • Baira Siul- it is located near the city Chamba in Himachal Pradesh. It flows from the river Ravi. It flows upto the international border in Indus. It’s a rockfill dam built for the purpose of hydroelectricity. It was completed in 1981.

It was completed in 2008 and was built for the purpose of hydroelectricity. It’s an earthen, gravity and masonry dam that has its basin in Indus upto the International border. 
  • Pandoh Dam- it was built for the purpose of hydroelectricity and irrigation. It is located near the city of Beas in Mandi. It was completed in 1977 and has its basin in Indus upto the international border. 
  • Parbati III Dam- it flows from the river Sainj and is located near the city Behali in Kullu district. It’s a rockfill dam that was completed in 2014. It has its basin in Indus upto the international border. It is used for the purpose of hydroelectricity. 
  • Parbati II Dam- it flows from the river Parbati and is located near the city Kullu. It is under construction. It’s a gravity and masonry dam being built for the purpose of hydroelectricity. It has its basin in Indus upto the international border.

Bhakra Dam- 

The Bhakra Dam is located near the Bilaspur district in Bhakra village in Himachal Pradesh. It’s a concrete dam which forms the reservoir of Gobind Sagar. 

The construction of the dam began in 1948 and it was opened in 1963. The dam is a tourist attraction for people coming from all over India. 

It is the second tallest dam in Asia with the height of 207.26 metres. 

Purpose Of Bhakra Dam- 

  • The Bhakra dam was built for the purpose of irrigation and the storage of rainwater. It is a source of irrigation water to Haryana, Gujrat, and Himachal Pradesh. 
  • The Bhakra dam also generates electricity and provides it to Haryana, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh. 

The dam has ten power generators on both sides. Hitachi and Japan provided the generators for the left powerhouse and were upgraded by Sumitomo and Hitachi. The generators on the right side were provided by the Soviet Union and were upgraded by Russia. The generators on both sides have the combined capacity of generating 1325 MW. 

Tourist attraction- 

The Bhakra Dam is a major tourist attraction as people can try water sports while visiting the dam. Gobind lake is an artificial lake made on the river Satluj. Tourists visiting the dam often experience Jungle Safari, Wildlife Sanctuary and visit Naina Devi temple.
