It is one of the most common components of any computer device. The importance of storage devices is that they can retain almost all the data and applications in a device. Depending on its demand or performance, it comes in various sizes and shapes. It can retain information for the short term and the long term. A storage device needs to reserve or store your important data.

What does Storage Device Mean?

It is a type of arithmetic hardware used to save, relocate or extract data files and objects. The storage device needs to retain the information both momentarily and permanently. It is one of the vital components of any computer device. These are accessible in various forms, depending on the type of elementary device.

Brief History of Storage Devices

Earlier, the storage devices were obsolescent mechanical systems based on the items like index cards and then magnetic tape. They assumed geminate through physical media. Generally, these became outdated when other digital media came into existence. At first, there were minifloppies, and then there were recordings that could hold a huge amount of geminate in digital formats. Computers and many other devices were made with leading hard drives, where an arm read an ordinary course to write data. Ultimately, a new option appeared called the Solid State Drive or SSD.

Importance of Storage Devices

The storage device plays a vital role in storing all our precious data. Without it, we won’t be able to keep our restricted data safe, and we won’t be able to process it.

The crucial importance of storage devices is the storage of data processing, which helps to increase its efficiency and performance. The storage devices under this classification are USB drives, SSD, and Portable hard drives.

There are other lists of storage devices, such as AWS storage or cloud storage, etc., but these are not the main sources of devices. These are one of the evolving modes of restoring your data online.

List of Storage Devices

The computer storage devices are mainly of two types:

1. Primary Storage Device:  This device is also known as the computer’s internal and main memory. The primary storage device under the list of storage devices is the CPU portion that contains program instructions, input data, and mediate results.

• RAM: The full form of this is Random Access Memory. The main use of this is to store the information immediately. The software already installed on the hard disk is brought by the computer to the RAM  to process it and use it by its user.
• ROM:  The full form of this is Read-Only Memory. The data written or stored in these storage devices are consistent, which means that once stored cannot be redesigned or erased. 

1. Secondary Storage Device: These devices provide persistent storage for impeccable data, which doesn’t need to be penetrated as regularly as data in primary storage. The storage device needs to function well on economical, less-performing devices that are more useful for long-term storage. Some examples of these storage devices are –

• Magnetic Devices: Devices such as hard disk drives use a magnetic device to attract smaller sections of metalware disk. Each of the smaller sections symbolises one bit. These devices are usually cheap, high in capacity, and long-lasting. But, they are sensitive to flaws if dropped. They are also attachable to the magnetic field.
• Optical Devices:  The laser beam is used by this device on the surface of a revolving disc that is made of metal and plastic to scan it.  The surface of the disc is then divided into tracks. Each track holds many flat and hollow areas. The flat area is land, whereas the hollow area is pits. When a laser beam shines on the disc surface, the light is reflected by the land and scattered by the pits. 
• Solid State Devices: The consistent Random Access Memory (RAM) is used by this device to store the data. This device doesn’t have any moving parts, so they have much faster mitigation times than any of the other devices, and also they are more durable. These devices are more appropriate for portable devices because they require less power.
