Computer Storage Devices

Computer Storage devices are hardware used in computing, porting and storing and taking out data and files permanently and temporarily.

Computer Storage devices are the devices made to store the information and instructions employed to store. Computer Storage devices, meaning, play an important role as one cannot be able to boot up or run or have good access to the information stored in a computer. And there are two types of storage devices- primary and secondary. Primary storage devices save main memory and are known as internal memory. They hold program instructions, intermediate results, and input data in a CPU section. Secondary storage devices are kind of information that is stored external to the computer as it is used for long term or permanent storage of data and programs.

Let’s learn about the storage device for computer examples

1. Hard disk

A Hard Disk can be installed on a laptop or desktop computer. It is also used to store operating systems, user documents, and software programs files. Examples of hard disks are text files, photographs, videos, and audio. It uses magnetic storage to retrieve and record all digital information. It is one of the fastest fast-spinning disks.

2. Floppy disk

A Floppy disk can be called a diskette, Fd, and floppy disk. It is also a magnetic storage device to store information, but they were common from the mid-1970s to the 21st century.

3. Tapes

Tapes are the storage devices often used to store huge amounts of data. And that, too, in the past, it was like a magnetic piece which is coated with plastic wrapped around wheels.

4. Compact disks (CDs)

The Compact disk is a kind of storage device which is optical where lights and lasers can write and read. In the beginning, these compact disks were used for music, but later in the 1980s, they were used as storage devices for the computer. Like, when starting compact disks were read-only meant CD-ROMs, and then they started to be used as writable and rewritable compact disks.

5. DVD and Blu-ray disks

They are formats of optical data storage, which include superseded compact disks because of their high and large storage capacity. For example, it can easily store up to 25 Gb(gigabytes) on a single disk and 50 Gb on a dual-layer disk. A standard CD is equal to its physical size but can store 700 MB(megabytes).

6. USB Flash Drives

It is also known as a thumb drive, flash drive, jump drive, memory stick, pen drive and USB stick. The flash drive is a kind of storage device that is very efficient, and one can rely on optical media as it is smaller, possessing and faster, having huge storage. Flash drives are durable as they lack moving parts.

7. Secure Digital Card (SD Cards)

These are used in multiple electronic devices like mobile phones, cameras, and any electronic device. They have a variety of classes, sizes, and capacities available and are used in rectangular sizes. They have one side to prevent cards from being inserted or incorrectly that is ‘chipped off’.

Five ways to easily back up data:

  • iCloud: Apple’s cloud solution offers 5GB of free storage. And users of Windows can sync their files with iCloud Drive.
  • Google Drive: Google’s service is provided on Android phones only, and users of Windows and Mac can download an app on the desktop for the capability of drag and drop. The free storage of this service is 15GB.
  • OneDrive: In Windows, it is accessible through Window 10’s file explorer. And users of iOs and Android can use it via the app. Also, users of Mac go and download the app from the Mac app store.
  • Dropbox: It offers business subscriptions and personal subscriptions. It has been for a while, and also, my account has free data of 2GB.
  • External and portable devices: These can be connected easily anywhere, like to any laptop or computer at a time. They are wireless and usually wired devices, and many now have the capability of 3.0 USB, and you can also take advantage of this 3.0 GB in your computer.
  • USB flash drives: They are exactly like solid drives in that you can put them in your pocket and take them anywhere. They used to be expensive, but now their prices are decreasing and accessible to everyone.

One can simply encrypt data and backup in phones, and anti-malware protection is necessary. Install operating system updates, and secure wireless network at home. In addition, the cloud provides a viable backup option and makes your personal computer or old ones, especially hard drives, unreadable. Automate your software updates which is a must thing one can do. Data storage is the main component of a good and successful business as you need to save and collect or arrange the files to have reliable payable expense reporting when it gets processed. Any other important documents, you don’t lose them.

Conclusion

We learned about Computer storage devices meaning, like hard disks, floppy disks, compact disks etc. They all can store and safely access the data and applications, but the only difference is that all have different capacities and have different ways to use. These storage devices are of two types – primary and secondary storage devices. Hope you have learned about these storage devices. As time passes, storage devices hold more data and get smaller. As you know, backup is important for our personal and business purposes. Hence, we all need a device that can save and hold all our data safely and be reliable at the same point in time as everyone has their own needs and preferences.
