There are many shortcut keys present on a computer, using which a person can save time. Shortcut keys refer to using one or more keyboard keys to act as a computer. Using shortcuts while doing work on a computer can definitely save time. It is also considered a best practice to use shortcut keys whenever possible. 

In a keyboard, there are many shortcut keys hidden, these keys are not only for acting on a browser but there are keys that can be used to perform an action in excel, word, PowerPoint, etc. Using shortcut keys in excel enhances the speed and efficiency of the work. It is also important to know basic terminologies related to it, as it is essential to clear some basic concepts before using the computer.

Basic terminologies related to Computer

Basic terminologies related to it are not so many. Understanding the basic knowledge of operating a computer is important only to understand the different parts and their use.

CPU

CPU stands for the central processing unit, which is the major part of the computer as it is considered its brain.

Operating system

The computer hardware is communicated with the help of an operating system, and it is essential to run the software. Without an operating system, a computer cannot work. 

Desktop, display, monitor

All these three terminologies are used to indicate the screen of the computer. It is where you will be able to see all the things.

File and folder

These terms are used as a form of storage on a computer. A file contains information that can be a document, music, pictures, video, etc. These files are denoted with a different name. On the other hand, a folder is used to organise the files on a computer. You can put similar files into one folder. 

Hardware and software

In terms of computer language, hardware is a piece of a computer, such as a printer, a keyboard, a monitor, etc. or hardware. And on the other hand, software or a program application cannot be seen because it is installed inside a computer based on the software computer functions.

All shortcut keys

There are numerous shortcut keys in a computer to perform a different action. There are different shortcut keys for each application. For example, MS excel shortcut keys are different, which can only be used for excel purposes. Some common shortcut keys that can be used on most applications are:

  • Select entire text- Ctrl + A 
  • To move to the first line- Home 
  • To move to the starting of the document- Ctrl + Home 
  • To move to end of the line – End 
  • To move to the end of the document- Ctrl + End
  • Open file menu option of current application Alt + F
  • Cut the selected text or item- Ctrl + X or Ctrl + Del 
  • Copy the selected text or item- Ctrl + C or Ctrl + Ins 
  • Past the cut or copy item- Ctrl + V 
  • To edit options in current application- Alt + E 
  • To shift to a word on the left- Ctrl + (Left arrow) 
  • To shift to a word on the right- Ctrl + (Right arrow)

Shortcut keys for Windows 10 

All shortcut keys that are used on Windows 10 are as follows:

  • To lock computer- Windows key + L 
  • To open task view- Windows key + Tab 
  • To take a screenshot – Alt + Print Screen 
  • To switch among open applications- Alt + Tab 
  • To open the start menu- Ctrl + Esc 
  • To close the open application- Alt + F4 
  • To close window- Ctrl + F4 
  • To reboot the computer or to open task manager- Ctrl + Alt + Del 
  • To adjust the size of columns of the windows explorer- Ctrl + Plus Key 
  • To switch among taskbar applications- Alt + Esc 
  • To switch back to the last open application- Alt + Shift + Tab 
  • To open properties of the selected item- Alt + Enter 
  • To do right click on the item- Shift + F10 
  • To delete the item permanently- Shift + Del 
  • To open options of shutdown- Windows key + X 
  • To get a screenshot- Windows key + PrtScn or Fn + Windows key + Space Bar 
  • To toggle among tabs- Ctrl + Tab
