Alapphuzha is a great example of efficient solid waste management. As per my opinion, why can't be incorporate hygiene, cleanliness and waste segrigation in the curriculum of primary schools and bring a change? RDF (refuse derived fuel) is generation of electricity by combustion of waste instead of coal. Now the problem in India is that we do have a huge pile of waste, but the quality is not worth using.. The pollution generated by it is also controllable by the use of APCD's (air pollution control devices) - Reference taken by Norway which is highly dependent on RDF for electricity and even imports waste from neighboring (and gets paid for that as well)... In case of POINT SEGREGATION, the dry waste like paper, metals and glass would be easily recycled, the other waste like plastics, will not be directly dumped into landfills... and one decent approach of converting organic/wet waste into manure or biogas will also tak place,.,. ---------- The technology to do so is also readily available, only awaits an input of quality waste... THERE ARE SOLID WASTE HANDLING RULES (for free on internet on MoEF site).. THIS SHOULD BE MADE MANDATORY TO COMPLY WITH AT LEAST AT WARD OR MUNICIPALITY LEVEL... and going back to the start of my answer, making the next generation aware will definately bring a good and a sustainable change in our society... -regards i personally believe that there is nothing called as a perfect answer... valuable comments are most welcomed....
