INDIAN CONSTITUTION : PREAMBLE "WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST, SECULAR, DEMOCRATIC, REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens: JUSTICE, social, economic and political; LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation; IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.


  5. SOVEREIGN The word "sovereign implies that India is neither a dependency nor a dominion of any other nation, but an independent state. There is no authority above it and it is free to conduct its own affairs (both internal and external) India is a sovereign nation, but also is a member of the "Commonwealth of nations"

SOCIALIST The term socialist was added to the Preamble by the Forty-second Constitutional Amendment But, the socialist essence could be found in the Directive Principles of State Policy (even before 1976) Indian brand of socialism "Democratic Socialism" Other brand of socialism - "Communistic or State Socialism" Supreme Court says "Democratic socialism aims to end poverty, ignorance, disease and inequality of opportunity. Indian socialism is the blend of Marxism and Gandhism, leaning heavily towards Gandhian socialism"


  7. SECULAR The word secular too was added in the Preamble by the 42nd Constitutional amendment -> Explicit Right to freedom of religion (Article 24-28) > Implicit The Indian constitution embodies the positive concept of Secularism
