मृदा तयार होण्याची क्रिया जमिनीवरील मृदा ही नैसर्गिक प्रक्रियेतून निर्माण होते. मूळ खडकाच्या अपक्षयातून मृदेसाठी अजैविकघटकांचा पुरवठा होतो. ऊन, वारा व पाऊस यांपासून निर्माण होणाऱ्या उष्णता, थंडी व पाण्यामुळे मूळ खडकांचेतुकडे होतात. त्यां पासून खडे, वाळू, माती तयार होते. या घटकांमध्ये सूक्ष्मजीव, कृमी, कीटक आढळतात. उंदीर-घुशींसारखे कृदंत प्राणीही आढळतात. तसेच जमिनीवरील झाडांची मुळेदेखील खडकाच्या अपक्षयासमदत करतात. मृदानिर्मितीची प्रक्रिया मंद गतीने सतत सुरू असते. परिपक्व मृदेचा २.५ सेमीचा थर तयारहोण्यासाठी सुमारे हजार वर्षे लागतात.
