ओझोनचा थर - संरक्षक कवच वातावरणाच्या स्थितांबर या थराच्या खालच्या भागात ओझोन (03) वायूचा थर आढळतो. ओझोन वायूचा सजीवांना जगण्यासाठी प्रत्यक्ष उपयोग नसला तरी खूप उंचीवर पृथ्वी भोवती ओझोनचा थर असणे सजीवांसाठी फार महत्त्वाचे आहे. सूर्यापासून येणारी अतिनील किरणे सजीवांसाठी हानिकारक असतात. ही किरणे ओझोन वायू शोषून घेतो. त्यामुळे पृथ्वीवरील सजीवांचे रक्षण होते. वातानुकूलन यंत्रे, रेफ्रिजरेटर्स यांमध्ये हवा थंड करण्यासाठी वापरला जाणारे क्लोरोफ्लुरोकार्बन्स तसेच कार्बन टेट्राक्लोराईड हे रासायनिक वायू हवेत मिसळल्यास ओझोनच्या थराचा नाश होतो. ओझोनचे महत्त्व सर्वांच्या लक्षात यावे यासाठी १६ सप्टेंबर हा दिवस जगभर ‘ओझोन संरक्षण दिन ’म्हणून मानला जातो.
