While preparing for any examination, it is essential to consider all the topics seriously and prepare them accordingly. GATE examination can be considered as one of the most essential examinations in the field of engineering. For those who are studying agricultural engineering, it is essential to study laminar and turbulent flow to crack gate examination. Students often find it difficult to understand this topic. In this study, the details regarding laminar flow and turbulent flow are going to be discussed in detail. It is hoped that this discussion can be helpful for the students who are preparing for the Gate examinations. In this study, the definition of turbulent and laminar flow is discussed in detail, with a description of laminar and turbulent flow formulas, and also with adequate examples.

Laminar flow and Turbulent flow

It can be stated that for fluid when it flows following a smoother path, it is called laminar flow. On the contrary, it is generally seen that the turbulent flow is chaotic and irregular. Hence, it can be stated that when a fluid flows following a smooth and streamlined path, it is called laminar flow, and when a fluid flows following an irregular and chaotic stream, it is called Turbulent flow. When the Reynolds number is low, it indicates laminar flow, and when the Reynolds number is high, it denotes turbulent flow. It is often observed that the behavior of the flow changes hugely if turbulent vs. laminar flow can be observed in nature. It is essential to study laminar and turbulent flow in the field of agricultural engineering.

Laminar and Turbulent flow in pipes

If the flow is to be measured within a pipe, it is measured through the number called Reynolds number. It can also determine the type of flow. It can be stated that in order to study agricultural engineering, it is essential to study the adequate measurement of turbulent flow in pipes for the purpose of irrigation. For irrigation, the flow in the pipes needs to be measured adequately, so that adequate flotation can be applied in the right field. In physics terminology, it can be stated that turbulent flow in pipes can be referred to as the changes that are often chaotic in their pressure and velocity. The laminar flow in the pipe is just the opposite of the turbulent flow. In laminar flow, the fluid flows following two parallel layers, where there is no disruption between these two layers. This flow is essential to increase the energy that is required for pumping the fluid in a pump. Hence, it can easily be understood that there is a huge importance of laminar and turbulent flow in agricultural engineering.

Laminar and Turbulent flow formula

It has been already stated that laminar and turbulent flow can be measured through the unit called Reynolds. If the number of Reynolds is lower than 2000, the flow of the fluid can be considered as laminar flow, and if the Reynolds number is higher than 4000, the fluid flow can be considered as turbulent flow. In agricultural engineering, and also in physics terminology, if the number of Reynolds is between 2000 and 4000, it is often considered as transitional flow.

There is a formula for the identification of the Reynolds number.

The formula is: NR = 2pvrn (the NR is the Reynolds number here, and if the nr is below 2000, the flow is laminar, and if it is above 4000, the flow is turbulent)

Laminar and Turbulent flow example

Although there are several examples of fluid flowing of fluid in other fields than agriculture, in the agricultural engineering field as well, there are certain examples of laminar and turbulent flow. If the examples of laminar and turbulent flow in pipes can be considered in the agricultural engineering field, it can be seen that pressure distribution along a horizontal pipe is one of the primary examples of laminar and turbulent flow.

Conclusion

After a detailed discussion on the turbulent and laminar flow, it can be stated that it is one of the most essential parts of agricultural engineering. It is essential to measure the difference between the turbulent and laminar laws, and it can be stated that the flow can be measured through the number of Reynolds. It is hoped from the study that in the study, all the factors are explained in detail, and also it can be hoped that the study can be extremely beneficial for the students to crack gate examinations, especially in the agricultural engineering field. It can also be stated that the explanation can be beneficial for the progress of the students, and also for other professionals as detailed explanations with formulas are provided in detail.

Ans : While the fluid dynamics are studied, it can be stated that if the fluid flows in a regular and streamlined way, it is stated as laminar flow. In the measurement, if the Reynold number is below 2000, it is stated as laminar flow.

Ans : In the terms of physics, if the fluid flows in a chaotic and irregular way, the flow can be considered as turbulent flow. In the Reynold number, if it is above 4000 it can be stated as turbulent flow.

Ans : Sometimes it is observed that the Reynold number is somewhere between 2000 and 4000, the flow is considered as transitional flow.

Ans : Turbulent flow in a pipe can be explained as the changes in the fluid motion that is characterized by the changes with extreme chaos in pressure and flow velocity.

Ans : The laminar flow is the smooth and streamlined flow of fluid, whereas the turbulent flow is the chaotic and irregular flow.
