  4. INTRODUCTION Ecology - 2 Greek words Oikos (home or environment) and logos (study of) So Ecology is basically concerned with the Interactions among organisms and between the organisms and its physical environment Ecology is basically concerned with four levels of biological organisation :- 1. Organisms 2. Populations 3. 4. Biomes Communities

  5. ORGANISM e An individual form of life, such as a bacterium, protist, fungus , plant, or animal , composed of a single cell or a complex of cells in which organeles or organs work together to carry out the various processes of life . Can be unicellular or multicellular Examples - Bacteria, Fungi, rose plant, lions, rats , humans, etc.

  6. POPULATION A population is the number of all the organisms of the same group or species, which live in a particular geographical area, and have the capability of interbreeding

  7. COMMUNITY * An assemblage of interacting populations occupying a given area.

  8. BIOME e Biomes are very large ecological areas on the earth's surface , with fauna and flora (animals and plants) adapting to their environment e Biomes are often defined by abiotic factors such as climate , relief , geology, soils and vegetation A biome is NOT an ecosystem, although in a way it can look like a massive ecosystem. If you take a closer look , you will notice that plants or animals in any of the biomes have special adaptations that make it possible for them to exist in that area. You may find many units of ecosystems within one biome
