  2. RELATIVE MOTION The word 'relative' is a very general term, which can be applied to physical, nonphysical, scalar or vector quantities. For example, my height is five feet and six inches while my wife's height is five feet and four inches. If I ask you how high I am relative to my wife, your answer will be two inches. What you did? You simply subtracted my wife's height from my height. The same concept is applied everywhere, whether it is a relative velocity, relative acceleration or anything else. Reality check Marks of A are 30 and marks of B are 60. Marks of A wrt B are (a) 30 (c) 90 (b) -30 (d) cannot say

  3. Motion is a combined property of the object under study as well as the observer. It is always relative; there is no such thing like absolute motion or absolute rest. Motion is always defined with respect to an observer or reference frame. Reference frame Reference frame is an axis system from which motion is observed along with a clock attached to the axis, to measure time. Reference frame can be stationary or moving. Suppose there are two persons A and B sitting in a car moving at constant speed. Two persons C and D observe them from the ground. B A Here B appears to be moving for C and D, but at rest for A. Similarly C appears to be at rest for D but moving backward for A and B Reality check Velocity of A is 3 m/s and velocity of B is 3 m/s. Velocity of A w.r.t B is

  4. RELATIVE MOTION IN ONE DIMENSION: Relative Position: It is the position of a particle w.r.t. observer In general if position of A w.r.t. to origin is x and that of B w.r.t. origin is xg then "Position of A w.r.t. B" XAB is AB Origin B Reality check See the figure (take +ve direction towards right and -ve towards left) Find xX X X and x BA CACB AB AC E A 6m 10m origin Here, Position of B w.r.t. A is Position of C w.r.t. A is ords right. (XcA Position of C w.r.t. B is towards right (xcB Position of A w.r.t. B is towards left. (XAB Position of A w.r.t. C is wards left. (xAC) towards BA

  5. 4m 6m 10m origin Position of B w.r.t. A is 4 m towards right. (XBA +4m) Position of C w.r.t. A is 10 m towards right. (XC10m) Position of C w.r.t. B is 6 m towards ight ( +6m) Position of A w.r.t. B is 4 m towards left. (XAB -4 m) Position of A w.r.t. C is 10 m towards left. (XAC10m)
