PUPPETRY Ancient - God as Puppeteerand we as Puppet In Sanskrit terminology Puttalika and Puttika means little sons' The root of Puppet is derived from the Latin word Pupa' meaning a dol India is said to be the home of puppets, but it is yet to awaken to its unlimited possibilities The earliest reference to the art of puppetry is found in Tamil classic Silappadikaaram'written around the ist or 2nd century B.C Natyashastra, the masterly treatise on dramaturgy refer to the art of puppetry but the producer-cum-director of the human theatre has been termed as 'Sutradhar'meaning the holder of strings. The word might have found its place in theatre-terminology long before Natyashastra was written but it must come from marionette theatre. Puppetry, therefore, must have originated in India more than 500 ears before Christ

Shadow Puppets Shadow puppets are flat figures They are cut out of leather, which has been treated to make it translucent The figures are painted identially on both sides of the leather Shadow puppets are pressed against the screen (White) with a strong source of light behind it The puppets are manipulated in such a way that the silhouttes, create a telling imagery Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu

Head is generally bigger than body Puppets are 1/2 foot high and hands are made of terrakota heads and wooden hands. Music is produced by clapping hands ora drum.   15. Yampui Bihar Region Puppets are made in one piece and have no joints. It describes Yampuri (the house of Death). The show begins with appearance of the death-god Yama and his messenger, followed by their record-keeper Chitragupta. One by one, the people (supposedly after death) are marched in front of Yama to receive their doles of punishment. The narrative is meant primarily to put the fear of heaven and hell in people for their current deeds and thus has almost the same purpose as Morality plays of the medieval Europe. Puppets are dressed in bright colours
