India is a democratic country where constitutionally the governance lies with the people's representatives. The total footfall during election is very low ( approx 66%) and it does not showcase the actual majority of the nation. It is biased and inclined to a particular individual or family and not the system for which it was designed eg. the dominance of Nehru Gandhi family over Indian politics for decades. Representative form of government was designed to avoid the accumulation of power in few hands to curb the autocratic attitude of the elected. However in 1976 Indira Gandhi declared emergency to bypass anti incumbency. The concept of representation is diluted with the low involvement of people in the voting. When a political party wins the election in the name of single Leader and not the party , it gives rise to populism . Modi's victory could also be seen as populist win. It has it own advantages and disadvantages. The leader represents the majority and the majoritarians start to dominate the governance. It creates a divide in the society and curbs the essence of Indian constitutional framework of ' government of the people by the people for the people'. Where the role of various organisations and media houses comes into picture to highlight the anti constitutional approach of the government. In the representative form of government one cannot work only for the majority. After being elected as leader, he has to work for all the sections of the society without bias. Elected leader has to take all the sections of society together to create a progressive nation. In India with time the people representation has changed to populism due to various social inequalities and sectarian divide. Luring BPL votes by distributing alcohol, agrarian votes by subsidies and vote bank politics in name of religion, caste, region etc has diluted the true essence of representative form of government. Maximum participation of citizens in the election and their fair votes can help to mark a balance between people representation and populism.
