Historical Perspective The growth and development of agricultural geography is as old as the other accounts of geography. The Greek, Roman, Arab, Chinese and Indiar geographers gave references of the agricultural activities, cropping patterns and variations in the dominant crops in the different parts of the then known world. The explorers of the Great Age of Discovery' and the Founders of Moderrn Geography like Verenius, von Humboldt and Ritter also differentiated in the agricultural practices of the different regions they travelled The first book on agricultural geography was written by Arthor young. His monumental work Environment and Cropping Patterns England was published in 1770. In his work Young attempted to establish a relationship betweern environment and agricultural phenomena. In his opinion, temperature, rainfal and soils are the major determinants of cropping patterns of a region.
After the return from south America and West Indies, Humboldt described the agricultural practices in the countries he visited and wrote in Kosmos Land Use in Cuba and South America in 1807. He adopted an inductive approach and established that the spread of cultivation in the forest areas of Cuba is the main cause of decrease in rainfall von Thunen was the first scholar who prepared a spatial model of agricultural land use and crop intensity. He propounded the Agricultural land use model in 1826. IMPORTANT- The basic aim of von Thunen's work was to explain the prices of farm products and the way in which such prices control agricultural production on any plot of land." He produced a statement of the land use pattern to be expected in his contemporary agricultural environment.
The first attempt of agricultural regionalization of Europe was made by Jonasson in 1926 in his work Agricultural Regions of Europe. Baker, one of the leading American geographers, published Agricultural Regions of North America in 1926. On the basis of areal strength Baker divided America into wheat, maize, cotton, etc., regions. On the lines of Baker, Jones produced his book Agricultural Regions of South America in 1928 Similarly, Taylor delineated Agricultural Regions of Australia in 1930. Another American Geographer Valkenberg divided Asia into agricultural regions in 1931 It was Derwent Whittlesey who delineated the Major Agricultural Regions of the World in 1936. L.D. Stamp prepared a comprehensive land use survey of Britain after the Second World War and produced his monumental work Land of Britain: Its Use and Misuse in 1948.
