 All You Need to Know About Lodi Dynasty

The last ruling family of the Delhi sultanate of India was the Lodi Dynasty. The Lodi Dynasty has been considered as of Afghan origin.

From the year 1451 to 1526, the Lodi Dynasty ruled the Delhi sultanate. Based on the facts that have been found by the historians, this current study has been aimed to include information regarding the Lodi Dynasty. In order to demonstrate all about the Lodi Dynasty, the study will include a discussion regarding the history of the Lodi Dynasty. Apart from this, the discussion about the Lodi Dynasty will include an explanation of the founder of the Lodi Dynasty. The administration of the Sikander Lodi and the Ibrahim Lodi along with the reason for declining this Dynasty has been included as well. 

History of Lodi Dynasty

As per the historians, the Lodi Dynasty was established by Bahlul Lodi and ruled from 1451 to 1526. In accordance with the record, the founder of the Lodi Dynasty, Bahlul Lodi was the governor of Sirhind of Punjab.  He was the governor of Punjab under the sultan of Delhi, Alauddin Alam. who came from the Sayyid Dynasty. First, Bahlul Lodi had occupied the province of Punjab by taking advantage of the weak position of the Sayyid Dynasty. Buhlul was capable of occupying the province of Punjab and later on Delhi was occupied by him in the year 1451 under the title of  Sultan Abul Muzzaffar Buhl Al Ghazi. 

Explanation about the founder of Lodi Dynasty

In accordance with the recorded history by historians, it can be stated that Buhlul was the founder of the Lodi Dynasty. The Dynasty started ruling by occupying Punjab. As per the statement of the historians, it has been found that Bahlul Lodi has been considered as the chief of the Pashtun Lodi Tribe. In his kingship, various phenomena had taken place which made the empire destabilize. However, the Sultan has been able to capture a number of nearby states. As per the record, it has been encountered that this particular dynasty has been considered as the only Afgan Dynasty that ruled over Delhi. 

Sikander Lodi of Lodi Dynasty

After the death of the founder of the Lodi Dynasty who is Bahlul Lodi, as the next ascendant of the throne, Sikander Lodi came to power in 1489. Sikander Lodi was the successor of the Lodi Dynasty as the heir of Nizam Khan with the title of Sikander Shah. This particular emperor has been found by historians for the establishment of a fair administrative system in order to rule over India. In accordance with the historical data, Sikander Lodi has been considered as the emperor who founded the historical city named Agra. During the era of his ruling, the kingship of the Lodi Dynasty has been spread over a vast area of India, starting from Punjab to Bihar. 

Sikander Lodi as an administrator 

As per the word of different historians, it has been found that Sikander Lodi was a fine administrator of the Lodi Dynasty. As the ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, Sikander Lodi kept a check on the nobles. On the other hand, it was made compulsory for the Governors to submit the accounts of income during the ruling of Sikander Lodi. Besides that, the governors were also being forced to submit the account of expenditure as well. In addition, in his ruling, the offenders were punished in a severe manner. 

Ibrahim Lodi of the Lodi Dynasty 

As per the history of the Lodi Dynasty, Ibrahim Lodi has been considered as the last sultan of Delhi who belonged to the only Afghan Dynasty that ruled over India. This particular emperor of the Lodi Dynasty was a suspicious tyrant. In his ruling, he started alienation from the nobles he had. In accordance with the historical information and records, Ibrahim Lodi was succeeded to the throne after the death of his father Sikander Lodi in 1571. Soon after having the throne of Delhi, Ibrahim Lodi had started facing several collisions and disputes between Afgan nobles and the royal family. 

Causes of decline of Lodi Dynasty Rule 

Based on the records, the reasons behind the fall of the Lodi Dynasty have been mentioned in the below section:

  • It has been stated that the Daulat Khan Lodi invited the emperor Babur to dethrone the last successor of the Lodi Dynasty, Ibrahim Lodi 
  • On the other hand, it has been stated by various historians that Ibrahim Lodi was over-ambitious. For having an overestimation of his strength, Ibrahim Lodi faced defeat in every collision with Rana Sanga. 
  • As per the critics, the last emperor of the Lodi Dynasty had no quality of being a great general. For developing the rash temperament, he had been unable to estimate his limitations and strength.

In order to sum up all that has been stated so far in the study, it can be stated that the most glorious moment of the Lodi Dynasty has been considered the ruling of Sikander Lodi. Sikander Lodi has been recognised as one of the greatest emperors in the history of the Lodi Dynasty. Based on these facts, this current study has focused on illustrating the facts about the administration changes made by Sikander Lodi along with the cause of the fall oF this dynasty as well.
