Answer: Mathematics is a field where the processes of counting, relations, measuring etc have been practised for ages. In the subcontinent of India, the numbering system used is known as the Indian Numbering System. It is often used to express large numbers.
The very basics of mathematics are formed by the knowledge of the numbering system. Hence it is of extreme importance that one learns about it.
The Indian Numbering System is a mathematical notation used simply for expressing large numbers of a set by making use of digits and other such symbols in a logical and systematic manner. The numeral system consists of the numerals 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9.
A unique mark was used to calculate large numbers long before the invention of the numbering system. The marking was often building barriers to mistakes and hence it was realised that a different system was much needed. It was then that the numbering system came into existence. This numbering system was kept as a standard for expressing all large numbers.
Just like this different numbering systems came into existence in different parts of the world at different time periods. The system adopted in India gained popularity as the Indian Numeral System.
The Indian numeral system uses commas ‘,’ as a medium of marking while expressing large numbers. Every number comes in a specific place known as the one’s place or tens place or the hundreds place etc depending on the size of the number needed to be expressed.
Every place demarcated by a comma has its special name based on its place and magnitude.
For example, if the number 12,34,456 needs to be expressed using the Indian numeral system it would be read as twelve lakhs, thirty-four thousand, four hundred and thirty-six.
Similarly, the number 1 Lakh will be written as 1,00,000. Therefore according to the Indian Numbering System, the number has five ‘5’ zeros.
Therefore, for anyone residing in the Indian subcontinent the knowledge of the Indian Numbering System is crucial to simply understand the numerals.
