• The series of compounds that have the same functional group is referred to as homologous series.
• They show similar general formula and chemical properties.
• There is an increase in the molecular size and mass thus, they have different physical properties.
• The most basic homologous series are-

Alkanes- general formula C_nH_2n+2

Alkenes- general formula C_nH_2n 

  Alkynes- general formula C_nH_2n-2

Examples- 

• Methane (CH₄)
•  Ethane (CH₃CH₃)
•  Propane (CH₃CH₂CH₃)
• Butane (CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₃).

We can say that there is a difference of -CH₂ between each compound.
