Various mutagens can damage one or mkre DNA bases such that specific base pairing cannot occur. Such damage is serious for DNA replication as replication enzymes have difficulty at bases in template strand that cannot specify a complementary base pair on the new strand. Thus gaps are left after the replication fork has passed by. The SOS response operates to allow repair leading to cel survival. Two important genes are: lex A and rec A
