Dear Shrikant ... we are only concerned about quality of energy not the quantity .First law deals with quantity of energy and states that total energy is conserved. Second law deals with quality of energy . The quality of energy degrades in every process that occurs in the universe .So we are mainly focussing of conservation of higher grade energy . Let me explain you through a simple example - water falling from height is higher grade of energy as it can be used to run turbine and obtain useful work but when that water has fallen to ground and flowing on ground it can be used to obtain useful work ...In the above process the energy was conserved but it's quality has degraded
