The Company had won the battle of Plassey in 1757, defeated the French decisively and acquired the Diwani of Bengal in 1765 as a result of its victory at Buxar. It had become one of the several powers that were contending for supremacy. Its policy at this time was to protect its territory by creating a fence of buffer powers along its borders against the attacks of rival powers — The Marathas, Haider Ali and the Nizam etc. So it maintained Oudh as a buffer against the Marathas and Arcot as a buffer against Mysore. The Company, during this period, negotiated treaties with the rulers of friendly native states on a footing of equality. The treaties with Arcot and Oudh were of this nature. The Company undertook to defend the frontiers of these states which ultimately meant the defence of its own territory.
