The main source of these halogen atoms in the stratosphere is photo-dissociation of man made halocarbon refrigerants, solvents, propellants, and foam-blowing agents (CFCs, HCFCs, freons, halons) popularly called as ODS (Ozone Depleting Substance) ozone depletion is occurring widely in the stratosphere, the depletion is particularly marked over the Antarctic region. This has resulted in formation of a large area of thinned ozone layer, commonly called as the ozone hole. .
