ESSENTIAL AND TRACE ELEMENTS Essential elements are classified as follows o Bulk structural elements-H,C, N, O, P, S o Macrominerals- Na, K, Mg, Ca, Cl-, PO42-, SO42 O Trace elements- Fe Cu, Zn o Ultra trace elements-F, I, Si, As, B, Mn, Mo, Co, Cr, V, Ni, Cd, Sn, Pb, Li Essential element is an element absolutely required for maintenance of life; Its absence results in severe malfunction of the organism or death O The organism can neither grow nor complete its life cycle without the essential element. 2


  2. CRITERIA FOR AN ELEMENT TO BE CONSIDERED AS AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT 1. Essential element should be present in tissues at comparable concentration 2. lts withdrawal should produce some physiological abnormalities or structural 3. Its presence prevents abnormalities 4. The function of the element can not be totally performed by any othe element.
