MAT was levived to facilitate the taxation of ‘zero tax companies’ earlier many companies were showing zero or negligible income to avoid tax. MAT is an attempt to reduce tax avoidance. Under MAT, such companies are made liable to pay to the government, by deeming a certain percentage of their book profit. MAT is levied at the rate of 18.5% of the book profits. MAT rate has been progressively increased from 7.5% in 2000 to 18.5% in 2015. In other words, the tax computed by applying 18.5% (plus surcharge and cess as applicable) on book profit is called MAT.
