Soils are subjected to stresses due to loads from foundations & self weight of soil. Elastic theory can be used in case of elastic soil mass & non elastic soil masses subjected to small order to stresses.
Elastic theory gives valid results because actual magnitude transmitted to soil from structural loading falls within this range.
Stress at any point 'P' in the soil mass due to point load 'Q' over the surface at point 'O' can be computed using . 
(1) Boussinesq's Theory
(2) Westergaard's theory
It is very important to know how these stresses are distributed in the soils due to the loadswhich are transmitted by the foundations from the structures.
