Cartesian Coordinate System . Two mutually perpendicular lines through any point in the plane of the paper forms a Cartesian Coordinate System Both lines are called Coordinate axes Point defined by plane (x coordinate, y coordinate) x coordinate = Abscissa y coordinate = Ordinate . Quadrant3 3 Quadrant -1 3-2-1 L1 2 3X Quadrant -3 Quadrant

Distance Formula Gives information about the shortest dist Gives information about the shortest distance between 2 points . represented on cartesian plane If 2 points P & Q are such that they are represented on cartesian plane as P(x,V1) & Q(x2,Y2) then shortest distance between these points . Distance between P(2,1) & Q(3,4) PQ v(2-3)+(1-4) PQ = v10 units

Section Formula If any point R(x,y) divides the line segment with end points P(x,V) . & atoa) internally in ratio of m,.m2 then coordinate of point R & Q(X,y,) internally in ratio of m,:m2 then coordinate of point R x = (m1x2+m2x1)/m1+m2 (x,y) (x2, ) If any point R(x,y) divides the line segment with end points P(x,V) & Q(x2,V2) externally in ratio of m,:m2 then coordinate of point R .
