CJI Ranjan Gogoi recuses himself from hearing plea challenging Nageswara Rao's appointment as interim CBI chief The Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, mandates that the Centre appoint the CBI Director on the recommendation of a committee chaired by the Prime Minister and comprising the Leader of the Opposition, the CJI or his nominee Supreme Court judge. Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi recused himself from hearing a petition challenging the appointment of M. Nageswara Rao as interim CBl Director and ordered the plea to be placed before a Bench led by the number two Supreme Court judge, Justice A.K. Sikri Chief Justice explained that it would not be possible for him to hear the case as there is a meeting of the high-power committee scheduled for January 24. This committee would recommend a name for CBI Director from a panel. Chief Justice Gogoi would be attending the meeting as member. . Twist: . Justice Sikri himself was part of the high-power committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which ousted Alok Verma as CBl Director and paved the way for the appointment of Mr. Rao as interim Director.

Centre proposes to hike monthly pensions Rural Development Ministry has proposed that the monthly pensions of the elderly poor, disabled and widows be increased from the current 200 to 800. For those above the age of 80, the proposal is to increase the pension from 500 to 1,200 a month. additional annual cost implication of 18,000 crore NSAP is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme with an annual budget of 9975 crore. It currently covers more than three crore people who are below the poverty line (BPL), including about 80 lakh widows, 10 lakh disabled and 2.2 crore elderly. Those who are older than 80 years are paid *500 per month, while the rest are given 200 per month. These amounts have not been revised since 2007. State governments add their own contribution, ranging from less than 500 to 2000 per month.
