Sign of Unity To Combat NTD

Study how India lights up Qutub Minar as a sign of unity to combat NTD. This article highlights the global community’s commitment to ending NTDS.

Neglected Tropical Diseases or NTDS are a threat to the healthy ecosystem of society and have been overlooked by the world health agenda. The causes of increasing NTD are immensely related to world poverty as these local diseases do not get priority from the world health agenda. India joined the unity events at Qutub Minar to combat NTDs on 30th January 2021. To combat NTDs World Health Organization has proposed an innovative strategy in the early 2000s  based on five public health interventions.

Why are some Tropical Diseases Neglected?

Generally, these diseases affect the poorest populations living in remote areas or urban slum areas. NTDS spread exclusively in impoverished populations in the developing world.

Lack of strong political voice, reliable statistics, and strange symptoms of diseases hampered the efforts to bring them out of the shadows. These diseases mainly affect the poor populations living in tropical and tropical areas. Based on the reports, the rapid growth of Neglected tropical diseases is mainly for poverty, low income or low middle-income economies.

How can a Sign of Unity Combat NTDs?

According to the analysis, NTDS affected billions of people with a collective burden equivalent to HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, or malaria for lack of global response. 30th January 2021 has marked the second annual World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day.

On this day,25 nations worldwide in more than 50 landmarks gathered to celebrate and show that they are united in beating NTDs. This celebration highlighted the global community’s commitment to combat NTDs which cause immeasurable suffering among poor populations. India has joined proudly on that day to combat NTDS by illuminating the UNESCO heritage site, Qutub Minar.

Guideline to Combat NTDs:

Based on the reports, 20 neglected tropical diseases like mycetoma, scabies, and snakebite envenoming become a threat to billions of people. The World Health Organization proposed a road map for neglected tropical diseases from 2021-to 2030. This development goal describes five broad inventions recommended by WHO that can combat NTDS.

Preventive chemotherapy and transmission control: This invention recommended by WHO suggests the availability of safe and effective drugs. These effective drugs work efficiently to implement large-scale preventive chemotherapy.

Vector ecology and management: Vector management is an effective invention that focuses on efficiently transmitting targeting mosquitoes, flies, ticks, bugs, and other vectors to pathogens. This invention has a great impact on eliminating NTDs.

Innovative and intensified disease management: This invention enables combat diseases within primary healthcare systems. It focuses on eliminating those diseases that create a threat to the health ecosystem. This intervention is used when cost-effective control tools do not exist.

Veterinary public health services: This intervention recommended by WHO  defines that the health of human beings is connected to the environment and animal health in which people live. Many NTDs, such as rabies, are zoonotic diseases transmitted from animals to the human body and create deadly effects on human beings.

Safe water, sanitation, and hygiene: The key invention drafted by WHO is the availability of safe water service, ample sanitation, and proper hygiene maintenance. It is a critical way to prevent NTDs because, based on the latest data, 40% of the world’s population does not have facilities for handwashing at home and lacks handwashing facilities in schools. In healthcare organizations, there are no sufficient facilities of toilets or hand washing systems for patients.

 Impacts of Unity Events:

Uniting to Combat NTDs is a dedicated partnership to create political will against NTDs and to beat NTDs. Uniting to Combat NTDs Secretariat aims to work collaboratively with the WHO and partners across the selected nations. The focus of unity events is to identify the issues of NTDs and achieve a plan for action to combat NTDs. To eliminate and control those neglected tropical diseases, a new and ambitious NTDs road map was launched. The vision of Uniting to Combat NTDs is to support the WHO road map to reduce NTDs by 2030.
