UPSC CSE 2027 Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates appearing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2027 must meet the nationality, education, age and other eligibility criteria set by the Commission.
- The final eligibility criteria for the CSE 2027 examination will be released with the CSE 2027 notification. All information below has been based on the current system and on the CSE 2026 examination guidelines which have most recently been published.
- For the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) a candidate must be a citizen of India. In addition, other notified services may have specific nationality requirements for candidates from Nepal, Bhutan and other specified groups; however these will vary depending upon the relevant rules.
- Candidate Qualification: Candidates need to have a bachelor's degree from a recognized university or another equivalent qualification. The degree can be in any field, and it is not necessary to pursue a certain course of study for the Civil Services Examination.
Under the present UPSC rules, there is a variation in the number of attempts allowed for each category:
- General and EWS: 6 attempts.
- OBC: 9 attempts.
- SC and ST: Unlimited attempts, subject to the prescribed age limit.
- Candidates with PwBD can have up to 9 attempts in General, EWS and OBC categories. Candidates with PwBD can make an infinite number of attempts if they are in the SC/ST category. However, both of these groups are limited by age.
- An attempt is counted as soon as the candidate sits for at least one paper of the Preliminary Examination. Simply filling out the application does not count as an attempt.
- Candidates must check the final eligibility requirements in the 2027 notice prior to completing their application process.
UPSC Prelims 2027 Exam Pattern
The UPSC Prelims 2027 examination has two mandatory, multiple-choice tests that will be administered on the same day. Each test is worth 200 marks, with each test taking up to two hours.
General Studies Paper I (200 Marks)
- This exam will assess each candidate's knowledge of various topics including History, Geography, Indian Polity, Economy, Environment, Science & Technology and Current Affairs. The total score that you receive on this exam will help establish your cut off point for the Preliminary Examination.
General Studies Paper II – CSAT (200 Marks)
- The CSAT measures an individual's comprehension of what is read, their ability to reason logically and analyze information, make decisions, solve problems, demonstrate general mental abilities and apply basic mathematical skills.
- The CSAT is a qualifying exam. To pass the CSAT, candidates need to receive at least 33 percent of the total possible marks, which equals approximately 66.67 marks on a 200 point scale.
- Negative Marks: UPSC uses a negative marking method for both of its examinations. Each examination has a specific number of questions and each question is worth a certain amount of points. If you get a question wrong, then you will lose 1/3rd of the total value of that question. If you do not attempt to answer a question, then you will not receive any negative marks.
The preliminary examination is a filtering process. The scores you get on the preliminary exam will not be used to determine your position on the final merit list.

How to Prepare for UPSC Prelims 2027
Candidates who are going to take the UPSC Prelims 2027 need to have a structured plan in order to study all of the syllabus, go through previous year questions, read about what is happening around the world today, practice taking mock exams, and review what they have learned.
- Understand the Syllabus: Start by looking at the official UPSC syllabus. Break down the syllabus into individual subject areas (e.g., History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Environment, Science & Technology).
- Read NCERT Books: Use NCERT books to build a firm foundation of knowledge regarding key concepts in History, Geography, Economy, and Science.
- Use Only a Few Reliable Reference Books for Each Topic: Select a few good, reliable reference books for every subject area you study. Do not collect many books that cover the same topic.
- Review Past Years Questions: Review at least the past ten (10) years of UPSC Prelims exam questions so you can learn about the format of the exam, the weight given to various topics, and how the questions are written.
- Read the newspaper daily to stay current with what is happening in the world. Review significant national and international events. Make connections between current events and static knowledge.
- Practise Mock Tests: Regularly attempt mock tests for each subject and also complete mock tests that cover all subjects. When you receive your results, analyze which questions you answered incorrectly and use this information to determine which areas of knowledge are your weakest.
- Regular Review: Prepare short notes on key concepts, facts, maps, government programs, and current events. Review those items as often as possible.
- The candidates can use both previous years question paper as well as the free mock test so that they may evaluate how well they are prepared for the UPSC exam and to also learn how to manage their time during the examination.
In order for students to improve their understanding of concepts and accuracy in their work, they must focus on developing these skills through practice and repetition instead of simply putting in more time studying.
Application Fee for UPSC Prelims 2027
The exact application fee for the UPSC Prelims 2027 will be listed in the official notification.
- In the last CSE 2026 examination, candidates who did not qualify for exemptions paid ₹100 to submit their applications for the preliminary examination.

- Candidates can utilize the answer key in order to determine how well they performed on the examination and what their score may be prior to receiving their official results.
- UPSC releases examination question papers and answer-key updates on its official website. However, there is no official announcement yet as to when the 2027 answer key will be released.
- The Commission's official answer keys are the only way to verify whether a candidate has answered questions correctly, and they should be used instead of using the "unofficial" coaching institute answer keys.
UPSC Prelims 2027 Exam Centre
The official CSE 2027 notification will include the list of UPSC Prelims 2027 exam centers.
- Candidates must choose their first-choice center when completing the application form. Whether a candidate can get into their first-choice center will depend on how many people are already registered for that specific center. It is recommended that candidates submit their applications as soon as possible to increase their chances of being placed in their preferred center.
- UPSC increased the number of preliminary exam centers from 72 to 83 in 2026, with the inclusion of Bhubaneswar, Kanpur and Meerut. The increase in the number of preliminary exam centers is expected to alleviate some of the strain experienced by the existing preliminary exam centers.
