Electromagnetism

The electromagnetic force is basically the attraction between positive and negative charges. Moreover, this force mainly acts upon those elements or charges which are already in motion. This force has no impact on the static elements. The direction of this force depends on the direction of both the electric forces and magnetic forces. Magnetic force always acts in the perpendicular direction and in the case of electric forces it acts only in horizontal direction (towards or away). Therefore, the direction of electromagnetic force is always perpendicular to the direction of both electric and magnetic forces. Hence, electromagnetic force always acts in z-direction.       

Different properties of electromagnetism 

In 1973, James Clerk Maxwell discovered the concept of electromagnetism. Before his invention, this concept has been considered as two separate elements such as electric and magnetic. However, his theory helps to identify this new concept and also mentioned some key properties of electromagnetism. Some of the key properties of these electromagnetic-forces are as follows:

• This force has the capability to act like electric charges. This force behaves the same in attraction and repulsion as electric forces. The same kind of charge always repels each other and different kinds of charges always attract each other. 

• Electromagnetic force also acts as per the pole just as the magnetic field or magnetic flux does. Therefore, this force also has some property of the magnetic field as well. Just like a magnetic field, the same kind of pole repels and different kinds of poles attract. 

• However, it is considered a much more long-range force comparing both the magnetic and electric forces and it always follows the law of inverse square. 

• In the case of the electromagnetic force, the field particles are basically photons and this force is approximately 10^36 times more strong than the gravitational force.  

Fleming’s left-hand rule  

This rule is useful to identify the direction of an electric motor when the direction of the magnetic field and the direction of the electric field are already known. It is a very simple and effective tool used to find out the accurate direction of the force of an electric motor where both the electric and magnetic force are working together. This rule has been invented by John Ambrose Fleming, who is an electrical engineer by profession. His other rule, Fleming’s right-hand rule is basically used for identifying the direction of electric generators. 

In this case, a human left hand is used to identify the required direction. It is determined by representing the thumb, forefinger, and middle finger and arranging all three fingers mutually perpendicular to each other. In this situation, the forefinger describes the direction of the magnetic field and the middle finger describes the direction of electric fields, then the thumb direction defines the direction of thrust or motion. All three directions are vice-versa; therefore, it is easy to determine any of three field directions with this easy tool.
