Foreign Words and Expression

The term foreign words and expression can be described as a word taken from another language and that can be pronounced and written differently.

Foreign words and expressions can be illustrated as a special type of word that has been taken from another language. This can be considered an integral part of the English language. Some foreign expressions can be seen in daily headlines in print media. Eventually the widely used foreign expressions and phrases become very common in day to day life, speech and literature. Hence it can be considered very important to have a brief knowledge about foreign words and phrases. 

Foreign words and processes to identify

Foreign words can be easily identified; the foreign words can be written in either italic or under quotation depending on the familiarity. Apart from that while using foreign words, the writer always puts some clues so that the word can be easily identified. Apart from that sometimes it can be seen that the writer may put some asterisks that may describe the definition and derivation of the word so that it can be easily identified. Apparently, either in the context part or at the bottom of the context the foreign word can be seen described. For example, etc, et al, ibid, sic, and many more

Guidelines to use italics in a foreign word

  • When a singular foreign word is used in a paragraph then only the word can be in italics.
  • When more than multiple foreign words and phrases are used in a sentence or paragraph then the sentences can be kept under quotation.
  • When the foreign word can be a proper noun then it is not required to italicize that particular word.
  • To obtain the proper consistency and proper understanding of the facts when more than two foreign words and phrases are used. Considering one of them is not familiar and the other is familiar then the writer can italicize both words for clarity.

Difference between jargon and foreign words

Jargon can be considered as the terminology that is used in a particular profession or trading site. Jargon can be considered as the technical application of the English language. For example, let’s assume a scientist is writing the description of the technical procedure then the scientist may use the jargon. This can be said that the readers of the reports of the scientist can have proper knowledge of words used in jargon. Therefore the scientist may easily use the jargon for those who may have the proper knowledge. However, the same scientist won’t use jargon for the common people because everyone might not have proper knowledge of the technical terms. Simultaneously, it can be said that Jargon can be considered sweet and very effective for the people who may have the proper knowledge. On the other hand,  jargon can be a completely difficult and foreign language for the outsiders who are not associated with that profession or trading. 

Accordingly, foreign words and phrases can be considered as  part of the language that is not commonly used in any country. However some foreign words can be popularly used. These words are taken from other languages and become a part of the native language. Foreign words can be easily identified, the foreign words can be written in either italic or under quotation depending on the familiarity. Apart from that while using foreign words, the writer always puts some clues so that the word can be easily identified.

The process to write foreign words

The process to write the foreign words may include primarily flexibility towards the writing style. Initially, the writer needs to focus on the deliverables instead of the language and after proper understanding, the writer needs to focus on the foreign words. Accordingly, the writer needs to properly study the available guidelines and examples before starting the process of writing. Simultaneously the writer must focus on the targeted language then alignment should be done.
