Ranking Test

The term "Ranking Test" defines the process of determination of position or rank of some objects or persons based on provided data such as age, height, the total number of objects or persons. Ranking and order reasoning is helpful to solve complicated questions related to rank and order in different competitive examinations.

Introduction

“Ranking and order reasoning” is associated with different determination of position and places as well as rank based on several provided factors such as age, height, total numbers of persons or objects in a particular row or column. The ranking test is beneficial for the determination of the rank of a person or the number of persons who are in between two other persons. Various types of sub-tests are associated with ranking tests such as “time sequence test”, “position test”, “ranking and arrangement test”. Ranking tests are beneficial for solving rank and order reasoning for different competitive examinations.

Concept of Ranking Reasoning

Ranking test or ranking reasoning broadly deals with issues regarding the gathering or arrangement of some objects or persons in descending or ascending order dependent on various parameters such as position, merit, weight, and height. Ranking and order mean relative standing or position. A ranking test can be considered as a procedure of determining such a place or position of a particular object or person. In ranking tests or related questions regarding ranking reasoning, relative ranking of various groups of objects or people are provided and an individual has to determine the rank or position of a particular object or person from right to left or from top to bottom of a column or row regarding some object or class of students.

Types of Ranking Test

Several types of ranking tests can be performed to solve reasoning questions and ranking and order “input-output reasoning section”. Below all of these types of ranking and order tests are explained briefly.

Ranking test from left to right

In this type of ranking test, an individual will have to determine the position of some object or person or the rank of that particular object or person from left to right.

Total object/person in a row

In this ranking test, opposite conditions will be provided such as the rank of some object or person will be provided in a row from left to right or top to bottom and an individual will have to find the total number of objects or persons in that bunch.

The object between two objects and person between two people

This specific type of ranking and order reasoning is generally known as “non-overlapping based reasoning”. In this type of ranking test, an individual will have to find numbers or objects or persons between two objects or people while their rank or order does not match the condition of overlapping.

Interchanging places or positions

In this type of ranking and order test, an individual will have to find the place or position of object or persons or total number of objects or persons in row while 2 objects/persons are interchanging their position.

Ratio based problems

In these categories of ranking and order reasoning, an individual is required to find rank or position of a person when a ratio has been provided in terms of gender, marks, height, and age.

Solving approach through a ranking test

The first strategy can be applied that rank is always from top to bottom and position can be determined from the side of the row. One individual can determine the total number of objects or person in a column or row by using a specific formula such as

Total Objects/Persons= Ranking from left + Ranking from right – 1.

In order to solve a non-overlapping type of question total number of persons between two people through a specific formula such as

A total number of persons between two persons= Total number of people – Sum of places of two various persons from opposite sides.

In order to solve overlapping questions through such a formula, “Number of persons between two people= Sum of places of two various people from opposite ends – total number of persons – 2”.

However, a specific condition for overlapping is that the total number of people will always be smaller than “sum of positions of two people from opposite ends”.

Examples of ranking test and order

If an example is considered as in a particular row of 54 people, X is 35 from the left side and Y is 22 from right side. So the total number of persons between them can be found as (35+22) = 57 which is greater than 54 (total number of persons).

So, “the total number of persons between them” is = (35+22)-54-2=1

So, there is only one person in between them.

Conclusion

After a brief discussion, it can be concluded that “ranking test reasoning” is helpful for quick determination of rank and order of a particular object or person in a column or row. However, in this study, six types of “ranking test reasoning” have been discussed and this can be found that “ranking test reasoning” is beneficial for both of cases such as overlapping and no overlapping cases. “Ranking test reasoning” is helpful for those candidates who are appearing in SSC examinations as they can draw a quick solution in ranking and order-related questions.
