Power Grid Corporation of India Limited is a power transmission firm responsible for developing, implementing, operating, and maintaining interstate transmission systems as well as national and regional load dispatch centres. Transmission and consultation are two of the firm’s areas. Extra high voltage/high voltage (EHV/HV) networks, as well as grid management, are all included in the transmission section. It also owns EHV AC and HVDC substations. Planning, construction, development, load dispatch, procurement management, construction and operation, finance, and project management are among the services provided by the consultant section.
National Power Transmission Corporation Ltd was formed on October 23, 1989, like Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. The corporation was formed with the aim of designing, implementing, owning, operating, and maintaining the country’s high-voltage transmission lines. The firm was renamed Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd on October 23, 1992. The corporation began by managing transmission assets held by central producing companies like NTPC, NHPC Ltd, and North-Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. The transmission assets of National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC), National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd (NHPC), and the North-Eastern Electric Power Corporation were shifted to the corporation in January 1993, as a result of legislation passed by Parliament on April 1, 1992.
It was earlier named ‘National Power Transmission Corporation Limited’ and tasked with designing, executing, owning, operating, and maintaining the country’s high-voltage transmission networks. The Certificate for Commencement of Business was received by the National Power Transmission Corporation on November 8, 1990. Following that, on October 23, 1992, its name was changed to Power Grid Corporation of India Limited.
In 1981, the Indian government made the decision to create a National Power Grid, which would allow the central and regional transmission networks to work together.
The National Grid is mainland India’s high-voltage energy transmission network, connecting power plants and important substations and guaranteeing that electricity produced anywhere on the continent can be used to meet demand elsewhere.
In October 1998, the Government of India designated POWERGRID as a Mini-Ratna Category-I Public Sector Undertaking, and in May 2008, the Government of India bestowed the designation of “Navratna”. POWERGRID, the country’s central transmission utility, plays a significant role in the Indian power sector and offers open access to its inter-state electric grid.
According to its mandate, the Corporation is instrumental in the establishment and implementation of regional and national power grids to expedite power transfer within and across regions while maintaining reliability, security, and an economy based on sound commercial principles, in addition to providing transmission systems for central sector power evacuation.
When it was founded, POWERGRID was in charge of the country’s power transmission administration. It consisted of:
It is a joint venture between the African Development Bank (AfDB) and African governments to invest in infrastructure.
Aim: Contributes to Africa’s economic progress by creating and investing in commercially successful infrastructure projects by stimulating public sector capital and mobilising private sector finance, all while delivering unique financial returns and impact.
Through linked networks, the power grid serves as a link between electricity providers and consumers. The electrical power grid is made up of three major components: Electric power generating facility. Transmission of electrical energy.
