The Municipal Corporation can be understood as the local yet urban government. In India, there can be other names also for the Municipal Corporations such as Nagar Palika, City Corporation, Mahanagar Palika, Nagar Nigam etcetera. Municipal governments can be described as authorities that are autonomous in nature. They are not a part of executive governments. Municipal governments are elected in a direct manner by the individuals so as to contribute to the promotion and their territory’s development. Thus, with this, some basic ideas regarding the municipal government can be there. As we move forward, we shall focus on the role of municipalities, functions of municipalities and objectives of a municipal council. 

Municipal Governments – Functions

Municipal Governments perform several different significant functions. One can divide these functions into two separate parts such as obligatory and discretionary. As per the obligatory functions, the Municipalities shall construct as well as maintain primary schools, public streets and hospitals, take care of water supply and lighting etcetera. As per the discretionary roles of the Municipalities, the facility regarding the housing of low-income groups, transport links provision, development and maintenance of the public parks, rest houses etcetera can be taken care of by the municipalities.

7. Supplying water for various purposes such as industrial, commercial and domestic uses is also taken care of by the Municipal Governments. 
8. The maintenance of the health of the public, proper sanitization of the environment as well as promotion of the ecological aspects – all come under the Municipal Governments. 
9. The services related to fire can also be taken care of by the municipal corporations. 
10. Protecting the forest land, urban forestry and ecological promotion can also be taken care of by the Municipal Governments. 
11. The interests of individuals who may belong to the society’s weaker sections are also something that Municipal Corporations take care of. 
12. The improvement of slum areas, as well as up-gradation of the slum areas, is something that comes under the role of Municipal Corporation.
