A Brief Note on “Social Justice” and Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment

Providing equal Justice to all socially is known as Social Justice, this means that everyone should be provided with equal political, economic, and social rights and opportunities. People should not be discriminated against based on religion, colour, caste, language, etc.

Body

The term ‘Justice’ means ‘to tie or to bind which is derived from the Latin word ‘jungere’. The concept of Justice is described by all cultures in different ways. “Justice’ is mostly discussed as an objective of society and state, this means that without Justice a state and a society cannot be evolved. Justice enables fair distribution and equal treatment for all people. Definition of ‘Justice’ as said by Dr. Raphael is that the right of an individual is protected by Justice and also society’s order. Justice is also based on the tradition and values of society.

Social Justice

The concept of Social Justice is based on the view that every citizen of the country must have the same access to health, wealth, privileges, Justice, well-being regardless of the people’s background like caste, color, economic background, or different circumstances. Relations between the groups in society are mainly focused on Social Justice. Social Justice is a concept that mainly deals with the equality between people and equality for all in different social aspects or dimensions. Social Justice is also practised or taught in some religious traditions; the base of the systems of socialistic economics is formed by Social Justice. Conflict theory is related to Social Justice.

Principles related to Social Justice

There are four principles of Social Justice

  1. Access

  2. Equity

  3. Human Rights

  4. Participation

Access

Accessing general commodities like food, education, and shelter is meeting the needs if the access is confined depending on the components like race, class, caste, gender, etc. which follows up the suffering of a whole society. Proving everyone the same access and opportunities to lead a good life is observed by the social activists.

Equity

Equity is defined as it analyses the conditions and targets for an equal outcome. One example we can take into consideration- is three people are watching a match over the fence, one of them is so tall that he can see the match properly, the other one is struggling to see over the fence but can see to some extent, but the last one is too short to look over the fence. So for this example equality will provide each of them with a box to stand on it and see the match but the tall one does not require this and the short person still could not see properly. Whereas equity will not provide the tall person with any box, the middle one will be provided with one box and the shortest one with two boxes; so that everyone can see the match properly. This is the most important principle in Social Justice which gives the right Justice to all.

Human Rights

There is a strong connection between human rights and Social Justice, the government and activists discovered that human rights and Social Justice are interlinked to each other. A society is friendly when it protects and obeys each people’s basic rights as a human.

Participation

Participation is one of the vital principles of Social Justice. Everyone in society should speak about their problems mainly when they are marginalised and have serious issues to be solved. Everyone should raise their voice together to get a solution to it because when some voices are raised proper Justice is not possible.

Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment works for the economically backward or the people of marginalised sections in the society which consists of the scheduled castes (SC), scheduled tribe (ST), the disabled people, victims of drug abuse, Other Backward Classes (OBC) and also the elderly people for providing them with Social Justice, empowerment and welfare. The headquarters of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is located in New Delhi, 110011. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has bureaus that are led by Joint Secretary, there are five bureaus such as Disability Bureau; Research, Project, Monitoring and Evolution Bureau; Social Defence Bureau; Backward Classes Bureau Coordination, Media, Administration; and Scheduled Castes Development Bureau.

Conclusion

It is to conclude that the concept of Justice is described by all cultures in different ways. “Justice’ is mostly discussed as an objective of society and state, this means that without Justice a state and a society cannot be evolved. The concept of Social Justice is based on the view that every citizen of the country must have the same access to health, wealth, privileges, Justice, well-being regardless of the people’s background like caste, colour, economic background, or different circumstances. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment works for the economically backward or the people of marginalised sections in society.
