The rivers of India have played an important role in the economic and cultural development of the country since ancient times. Bank of Ganga

The largest river system in India is the Ganges river system. The biggest catchment area in India is of river Ganges.

The Ganges river originates from the Himalayas in India and joins the Bay of Bengal. The mouth formed at this meeting place is known as Sundarban. The important tributaries of Ganga are Ramganga, Gomti, Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi and Mahananda. The length of this river is 2,510 km. It joins the Bay of Bengal, irrigating left bank tributaries of Ganga and right bank tributaries of Ganga in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. India covers an area of ​​about 8.6 lakh sq km of the Ganges basin. Finally, the Ganges river discharges itself into the Bay of Bengal near Sagar Island.

The Ganges river flows through two countries – India and Bangladesh. Formed the Ganges river in Uttarakhand by joining the combined streams of two rivers. These two streams are – the Bhagirathi River and Alaknanda River. The Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers join together at DevPrayag to form the Ganges.

Tributaries of Ganga River

The tributaries of the Ganges river can be divided into two parts for convenience:

(1) Rivers that come on the right bank of the Ganges river

(2) Rivers that come on the left bank of the Ganges river

The Left tributaries of the Ganga river:

1)Except for the Yamuna river, all the other Himalayan rivers meet on the left bank tributaries of Ganga, whose sequence from west to east is as follows –  Mahananda, Ramganga, Gomti, Ghagra, Gandak, and Kosi.

2)Ramganga, Gomti, and Ghaghara rivers flow in Uttar Pradesh. Gandak river and Kosi river flow in Bihar, while the Mahananda river flows on Bihar and West Bengal border.

3)The Gomti River is the only tributary of the Ganges River, which does not originate from the Himalayas but originates in the plains. The Gomti River originates from the Fulham Lake situated in the Terai plain in the Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh.

4)The cities of Lucknow and Jaunpur are situated on the banks of river Gomti.

Gandak is also called Shaligram or Narayani river in Nepal.

5)The Kosi river originates from Nepal and meets the Ganges river in the state of Bihar. The Kosi River is sometimes called the Shore of Bihar because the Kosi River is notorious for changing its course.

6)The Mahananda River is the easternmost or last tributary of the Ganges River, which meets on the left bank of the Ganges River. The Mahanadi originates from the Darjeeling hills in West Bengal.

 

The right tributaries of the Ganga river:

1)The rivers that come on the right bank tributaries of Ganga are mainly Yamuna, Chambal, Sindh, Betwa, Ken, Tons, and Son rivers.

The rivers of the peninsular plateau that meet on the right bank of the river Ganges are Chambal, Sindh, Betwa, Ken, Tons, and Son.

2)Yamuna River is the only Himalayan tributary of the Ganges River, which joins on its right bank.

  • Yamuna River:- Yamuna River is the longest Himalayan tributary of the Ganges River. Yamuna River originates from Yamunotri Glacier at Bandarpunch Peak in Uttarakhand and joins the Ganga River at Prayagraj.
  • The Yamuna river is shorter than the Godavari river, the longest river in peninsular India. The length of the Yamuna river is about 1385 km. 

3) Chambal, Sindh, Betwa, Ken:- Although the Chambal, Sindh, Betwa, and Ken rivers are part of the Ganges river system, these four rivers do not pour their water directly into the Ganges river and drop into the Yamuna river.

  • Chambal River is the largest tributary of Yamuna River. 
  • These four rivers, Chambal, Sindh, Betwa, and Ken, originate from the Malwa plateau under the peninsular plateau.

4) Tons and Son:- Both these rivers, Tons and Son, also emerge from the peninsular plateau and directly drain their water into the Ganges river.

  • Tons river meets the Ganges in Prayagraj (Allahabad) district.
  • The Son river originates from the Amarkantak peak of Maikal hill and joins the Ganges near Patna.
