The Paper Industry in India is one of the dominant industrial sectors with a rich history, starting from the 18th century with the establishment of the first machine-based mill. The raw material used for paper manufacturing in India is different, with wood fibre as the primary material. All the raw materials are mostly procured from agro and forestry farming. The wood fibre is converted into wood pulp, a spongy mass-produced by breaking down the cellulosic material by adding additives. The wood pulp is subjected to further treatment and mechanical processes to produce paper. The raw material used for paper manufacturing in India is now slowly shifting from heavy reliance on wood fibre to recycling waste and agro-waste.
The history of paper production in India can be traced back to the 12th century. The Chinese were the first to make papers, and the technology eventually spread to Samarkand. This paper technology reached India through artisans from Samarkand. Writing material was available in ancient India in the form of stone, metal, shells, palm leaves, wooden boards, birchbark, etc.
The first industry for manufacturing paper was established in Kashmir in around 1417–67 AD by Sultan Zainul Abedin. The ruler was held hostage in Samarkand, and upon returning to Kashmir, he brought along artisans skilled at making paper. The raw material used for paper manufacturing in India in the olden times was restricted to forest waste and the production of wood pulp. The history indicates that the main tools used by artisans during the 14th century were a hammer, screen, teak-wood frame, date palm brush, and polishing stone.
The papermaking industry uses many raw materials, out of which wood fibre is the primary resource. The paper pulp is obtained from wood by breaking down the cellulose fibre content to produce paper. The Indian papermaking industry is vast, yet it produces only 5% of the world’s total. As per the Indian Paper Mills Association, the annual turnover of INR 700 billion provides over 0.5 million individuals direct employment.
Here are some of the raw materials used for paper manufacturing in India:
After the raw material is obtained, it requires further processing to manufacture the paper.
Here are the steps to understand how paper is made:
Paper is used for educational and academic purposes, tissue paper, packaging, etc. The most common raw material used for the generation of the maximum percentage of paper is the wood fibre obtained from harvesting hardwood and softwood. The other raw material used for paper manufacturing includes recycled paper pulp, bamboo, grasses, etc.
