Famous Personalities of Telangana

Rani Rudrama Devi

One of the few female monarchs of India, Rani Rudrama Devi was a ruler of the Kakatiya dynasty from 1263 to 1295. She began her rule at the age of 14 as a co-regent to her father Ganpatideva and adopted the name Rudradeva Maharaja. However, a lot of people were against her rule, as they did not want to serve under a woman and took up arms against her. She married Virbhadra of the Chalukya dynasty, a political alliance made by her father, who had no hand in the kingdom’s administration. 

Daasarathi Krishnamacharyulu

Born on 22 July 1925, Daasarathi Krishnamacharyulu, also known as Daasarathi, was a poet, writer, thinker, and freedom fighter. He was a well-read scholar of the Puranas. He postponed his higher education to join a movement to fight against the autocratic rule of the Nizam of Hyderabad. His revolutionary poems were influenced by the communist ideology of Karl Marx. Some of his famous poems are ‘Maatrubhoomi’, ‘Desabhakti’, ‘Prajaporatam’, ‘Dharmachakram’, ‘Vasanthakumari’, ‘Silpi’, etc. He went to jail for participating in Satyagraha, and recently, his jail cell was renamed ‘Daasarathi cell’. He was awarded the State Academy Award in 1967. 

Chityala Ailamma

Also known as Chakali Ailamma, Chityala Ailamma was born in 1919, in Warangal, Telangana. She was known to be a revolutionary leader and fought for the freedom of Telangana. She revolted against the feudal lord, zamindar Ramachandra Reddy, known as Visnoor Deshmukh, to protect her four acres of land. She later joined Andhra Mahasabha and the Communist party. She died in 1985.

PV Narasimha Rao

Indian politician and lawyer Pamulaparti Venkata Narasimha Rao was born on 28 June 1921. A proficient linguist, he could speak 17 languages. He was a well-known politician and had a rather illustrious political career.

  • External Affairs Minister: 31 March 1992–18 January 1993,

  • Minister of Home Affairs: 12 March 1986–12 May 1986 and 19 July 1984–31 December 1984

  • Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh: 30 September 1971–10 January 1973

Zakir Husain

Born on 8 February 1897, Zakir Husain was the third president of independent India and also the first to die during his term. He was a devout believer in secularism and followed the ideologies of Gandhi. Zakir Husain founded the Muslim National University and served as its vice-chancellor. He also served as the vice-chancellor for Aligarh Muslim University. He was a part of the UNESCO executive board from 1956 to 1958 and served as the governor of Bihar. Zakir Husain was elected as the vice president of India in 1962 and as the president of India in 1967.

PV Sindhu

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is a highly accomplished badminton player. She has won several medals for India at international events. She won the silver medal in the Rio Olympics 2016. She was ranked World number 2 in April 2017 and won gold in the 2019 World championships. PV Sindhu is one of the most famous gems in our country.  

Mohammad Azharuddin

Mohammad Azharuddin, more commonly called Azhar, was a very talented middle-order Indian batsman. He has played 334 one-day matches and 99 tests for India. His cricket career was demolished in 2000 when he was caught in a match-fixing case and banned for life by the BCCI. He later joined politics in 2009 and was elected as the president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association in 2019.

Shabana Azmi

Shabana Azmi is one of India’s finest film, television, and theatre actresses. She is the daughter of poet Kaifi Azmi and the stage actress Shaukat Azmi. She made her debut in 1974 and quickly rose to fame with her unconventional and surprising roles. She has won five national awards as the best actress, five Filmfare awards, and many other accolades for her tremendous work. She received Padma Shri in 1998 and Padma Bhushan in 2012. She is a women’s rights activist and a Goodwill Ambassador of the UNFPA. 

Kaloji Narayana Rao

Political activist, poet, and freedom fighter Kaloji Narayana Rao was born on 9 September 1914. He was also known as  Kaloji, Kalanna, and Praja Kavi. He composed many famous works, such as Kaloji Kathalu (1943), Parthiva vyayam (1946), and Anna Kathalu (1941). He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1992 and died on 13 November 2002. His birthday is celebrated as Telangana Language Day.

Ali Yavar Jung 

Former governor of Maharashtra, Ali Yavar Jung, was born in 1906. He was a diplomat, governor, politician, and social activist. He served as an Indian ambassador in many countries, including Argentina, Egypt, Yugoslavia, Greece, France, and the United States. He received Padma Bhushan in 1959 and Padma Vibhushan in 1977.
