Frequently Asked Questions
Is there any retirement age for the Prime Minister of India?+
No. There is no specific retirement age prescribed by the Constitution for a Prime Minister. However, he/she will have to satisfy all other constitutional requirements and also maintain the support of the majority of members in the Lok Sabha.
What is the current age of the Prime Minister of India?+
On October 29th, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seventy -six years old. He was born on September 17th, 1950.
How many years does Modi have left as Prime Minister?+
The length of time Narendra Modi may serve as India's Prime Minister is not limited by his age. His time in office will depend on whether he meets the constitutional requirements and has the support of parliament. Unless dissolved earlier, the current Lok Sabha's normal term is set to conclude on 23 June 2029, however, this does not mean that each member of the current Lok Sabha will continue as Prime Minister until that time.
How long is a single term for the Indian Prime Minister?+
The Constitution does not specify that the Prime Minister will be elected to a separate, fixed five-year term. In general, the Lok Sabha has a five-year term, unless it is dissolved prior to that time, and the Prime Minister must have the support of the majority of the members of the House in order to remain in office.
Can a Prime Minister be removed before completing the five-year term?+
Yes, a Prime Minister could be required to resign if he/she loses the support of the Lok Sabha. In addition, a Prime Minister can voluntarily step down from his/her post or cease to hold it due to other reasons. There is no requirement that the current Government will stay in power for the duration of the entire five-year period that the Lok Sabha exists.
