Biotechnology means using biology to solve our day-to-day problems and make some valuable products for them. The main area where we use biotechnology is genetic engineering. It is mainly used to produce proteins and other drugs, which are important for this genetic engineering. These products are employed to help us improve our lives and the health of the people of this planet. For example, studying microorganisms to find out their importance in food and how to make beneficial food products from them. The baking of bread and many techniques to save or preserve the products made from dairy, for instance, were born out of this.

Biotechnology is used in many ways to heal this world. It uses genetics to –

• Reducing the rate of diseases that may be infectious to humans
• Save many lives by providing these technologies
• Invent new techniques which help in faster detection of disease

Because of this, the health risk percentage has decreased significantly, and the side effects are also very low.

Helps to fuel the world

Biotechnology uses some biological catalysts like enzymes, tiny microorganisms, and some processes like fermentation to make some types of plants that help to fuel the world. Some examples are as follows-

• Streamline some chemical processes for about 80%
• Lowers the temperature used to clean clothes in industries
• Reduces the use of petrochemicals in industries
• Increases the use of biofuels for gas emissions
• Increasing manufacturing efficiency by 50%

Helps in feeding the world

Biotechnology helps a lot to decrease crop resistance and helps in using more farming practices that are more environmentally sustainable. Some of how biotechnology helps in feeding the world are-

• Generating higher crop yields
• Producing food that is free from toxins
• Developing crops that are high in nutrition
• Increase the oil content in crops, which helps increase the cardiovascular health of humans

Applications of Biotechnology

Biotechnology has many applications in animals in biology, agriculture, and medicine that are further used to make valuable products that humans use. Various applications of biotechnology in animals may include

Medicine 

The number of applications of biotechnology in medicine is vast is –

1.  It is used to produce insulin, mainly used by diabetic patients.

2.  It is used to help in gene therapy that is used to cure the genetic disorders that take place in humans.

3.  Helps in producing vaccines that both animals and cells use.

Agriculture

Biotechnology is also used to modify crops genetically. The applications help in –

1.  Generating crops that are genetically modified. That helps reduce pesticides and is more tolerant to atmospheric stress like temperature.

2.  Formation of pesticides that harm the crops significantly less and help in good growth of these crops.

3.  Forming pest-resistant crops that do not require any form of pesticide for their growth.

Animals

It helps animals in many ways and works basically on transgenic animals.

Biotechnology helps provide suitable methods to improve the health of humans and their welfare. It helps to improve the quality of food we eat, apart from treating and preventing animals and humans from various diseases.

Biotechnology is used vastly with animals which helps in developing both, which is termed animal biotechnology. Applications are as follows-

1. Advance health- It helps in producing good medicines for humans that are beneficial for them and helps in curing the disease faster. In addition to this, biotechnology can also produce organs in animals that can be transplanted.
2. Improving health- Biotechnology provides many technologies which are very beneficial for farmers. In addition to this, biotechnology has also brought many treatments which help in the prevention of disease in human beings.
3. Nutritious food- Biotechnology helps in producing food that is richer in nutrition. With healthy animals, the animal-based product will also be of good quality (milk, eggs, etc.).
4. Protection of the environment- With the help of biotechnology, we can produce environmentally friendly animals and conserve endangered species. This leads to minimising the impact of animals on the environment. So we get a healthier population of species.
