The exam pattern, total marks (720) and syllabus are expected to stay the same - only the mode changes. NEET 2027 CBT Mode: Latest NTA Update

NEET-UG 2027 is set to become the first NEET exam conducted entirely on computers, replacing the pen-and-paper OMR sheet. The shift was announced by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on 15 May 2026, after NEET-UG 2026 was cancelled over paper-leak allegations. The NTA has since told the Supreme Court, through an affidavit, that it is ready to conduct NEET-UG in CBT mode from 2027.

The reform follows recommendations from the High-Level Committee of Experts (HLCE) and the Radhakrishnan Committee, set up after the 2024 NEET controversy. Key points:

• NEET-UG moves to CBT to improve security and transparency, with multi-session, multi-stage testing recommended.
• The change is being implemented in consultation with the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
• NEET-UG was the last major NTA exam still on paper - JEE Main and CUET are already CBT.
• NEET 2026, including the 21 June 2026 re-exam, stayed pen-and-paper; CBT applies from 2027.

Is NEET 2027 Online or Offline?

NEET 2027 will be online (computer-based), not offline. This is the biggest change to India’s medical entrance exam in over a decade. Until 2026, NEET-UG was an offline, pen-and-paper, OMR exam. From 2027, it becomes an online CBT taken at authorised NTA centres.

Importantly, “online” does not mean home-based. You still travel to an allotted exam centre and sit under invigilation - only the answering medium changes from an OMR sheet to a screen and mouse.

What Is CBT Mode in NEET 2027?

A Computer-Based Test (CBT) is taken on a computer instead of a paper booklet and OMR sheet. In NEET 2027 CBT mode:

• Questions appear on screen and are navigated using a question palette.
• You answer with a mouse or keyboard - no bubbling, no pencil.
• You can change or clear any answer any number of times before final submission.
• A “Mark for Review” feature lets you flag questions and return to them later.
• The paper is encrypted and unlocked only minutes before the exam, sharply reducing leak risk.
• Results are processed faster than with manual OMR scanning.

1. Download your admit card from the official NTA portal.
2. Reach the centre early - reporting at least one hour before the exam.
3. Clear security checks and identity/biometric verification.
4. Take your allotted seat / computer terminal.
5. Read the on-screen instructions carefully before the timer starts.
6. Attempt the test, using Mark for Review strategically.
7. Review and submit before the timer ends.

Carry only NTA-permitted items (admit card, valid photo ID, passport-size photo). Calculators and electronic devices are not allowed.
