NEET 2027 will be conducted in CBT (Computer-Based Test) mode. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced on 15 May 2026 that NEET-UG will move from the pen-and-paper OMR format to a fully computer-based test from 2027, and the NTA has confirmed this to the Supreme Court. The exam pattern, total marks (720) and syllabus are expected to stay the same - only the mode changes. Here is the latest NTA update, the expected NEET 2027 exam pattern, marking scheme, exam-day rules and a step-by-step plan to prepare for CBT mode.

NEET-UG 2027 is set to become the first NEET exam conducted entirely on computers, replacing the pen-and-paper OMR sheet. The shift was announced by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on 15 May 2026, after NEET-UG 2026 was cancelled over paper-leak allegations. The NTA has since told the Supreme Court, through an affidavit, that it is ready to conduct NEET-UG in CBT mode from 2027.
The reform follows recommendations from the High-Level Committee of Experts (HLCE) and the Radhakrishnan Committee, set up after the 2024 NEET controversy. Key points:
NEET 2027 will be online (computer-based), not offline. This is the biggest change to India’s medical entrance exam in over a decade. Until 2026, NEET-UG was an offline, pen-and-paper, OMR exam. From 2027, it becomes an online CBT taken at authorised NTA centres.
Importantly, “online” does not mean home-based. You still travel to an allotted exam centre and sit under invigilation - only the answering medium changes from an OMR sheet to a screen and mouse.
A Computer-Based Test (CBT) is taken on a computer instead of a paper booklet and OMR sheet. In NEET 2027 CBT mode:
It is the same proven interface already used for JEE Main, CUET and GATE.
The NEET 2027 exam pattern is expected to remain the same as 2026 - only the mode changes from OMR to CBT.

Because of negative marking, blind guessing carries a negative expected value. Use the CBT “Mark for Review” tool to manage doubtful questions instead of risking a −1.
The move to CBT changes how you take the exam, not what you study.

The NEET 2027 CBT interface will mirror the standard NTA exam screen. Expect:
Getting comfortable with this exact layout before exam day is the single biggest CBT advantage - which is why screen practice matters.
|
Advantages |
Challenges to prepare for |
|
Edit answers anytime - no OMR bubbling errors |
Screen fatigue over a 3-hour test |
|
Stronger security - encrypted papers, minimal leak risk |
Limited computer exposure for some rural aspirants |
|
Faster, more accurate results |
No physical underlining on passages |
|
“Mark for Review” aids time management |
Scrolling through long passages on screen |
|
Consistent experience across all centres |
Adapting to mouse-and-keyboard answering |
Every challenge above is solvable with CBT mock-test practice. Lakhs of students already clear JEE Main, CUET and GATE in CBT mode - familiarity is the deciding factor.
Carry only NTA-permitted items (admit card, valid photo ID, passport-size photo). Calculators and electronic devices are not allowed.
Your concepts win the score, but screen familiarity, navigation, accuracy under pressure and exam-day temperament decide whether you convert that knowledge on test day. Follow this phased CBT plan.
The fastest way to remove the “new format” disadvantage is to experience NEET before the real exam. Unacademy NEET UG 2027 CBT lets you practise on the actual exam ecosystem - not just a mock test.
Unacademy Prime adds 700+ hours of lectures, 15k+ practice questions, 30+ practice tests & All India Mock Tests, last 5 years’ PYQs, and structured recorded one-shots & revision series.
Built to replicate the real NEET: select preferred city → receive admit card → report to centre → identity verification → security check → seat allocation → computer-based examination → result within 24 hours → video solutions → performance analysis.
