Last updated: June 2026

NEET 2027 would be organized in the Computer-Based Test (CBT) format. According to Union Education Minister Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan who made an announcement on 15th May 2026, NEET-UG would shift from paper-pen OMR format to full-fledged computer-based examination from 2027, which has been confirmed by the NTA to the Supreme Court. There is no change in the examination pattern, total marks (720), and syllabus, but there is a change in the mode. This is the latest NTA update on the NEET 2027 exam pattern, marking scheme, instructions on the day of the examination, and preparation steps for CBT mode.

NEET 2027 CBT Mode: Latest NTA Update

NEET-UG 2027 is scheduled to be the first time when the NEET exam will be fully held on a computer without using the pen and paper OMR sheet. This information was released on 15th May 2026 by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan after the cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 due to some claims about paper leakage. Later, the NTA submitted the affidavit to the Supreme Court stating that NEET-UG can be conducted through CBT from 2027.

The change is suggested according to the recommendations of the High-Level Committee of Experts (HLCE) and Radhakrishnan Committee, which were established after the 2024 NEET issue. The main points of change are as follows:

  • It is supposed to transfer NEET-UG to CBT in order to ensure better security and transparency with multi-session, multi-staged tests.
  • The change is going to be made with the consultation of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
  • NEET-UG is the last remaining examination held on paper of NTA - JEE Main and CUET are CBT.
  • NEET 2026 and the 21st June 2026 retest were pen and paper tests; CBT applies from 2027.

Is NEET 2027 Online or Offline?

The NEET 2027 will be computer-based (CBT). This will be the greatest change for India’s medical entrance examination in more than a decade. Till 2026, the NEET-UG used to be an offline, pen and paper test that uses OMR system. From 2027, it is an online CBT conducted at designated NTA centres.

However, one must understand that “online” means not home-based. The candidate will travel to an allotted testing center as before – the only thing changing is the method of answering the questions, from OMR to screen and mouse.

What Is CBT Mode in NEET 2027?

Computer Based Test (CBT) will be attempted on a computer rather than attempting in an OMR sheet and booklet. NEET 2027 - CBT Mode:

  • The questions are displayed on the computer screen and navigate through a question palette.
  • You attempt the answers through a mouse or keyboard without bubbling or pencil.
  • There are no restrictions on changing or clearing your answers as many times as you wish prior to submitting your answer.
  • “Mark for review” option allows you to mark questions for future viewing.
  • Your paper is encrypted and unlocked minutes before the test starts, thereby minimizing chances of leakages.
  • Faster processing of results compared to conventional OMR scanning process.

The same user interface is being used for JEE Main, CUET and GATE.

NEET 2027 Exam Pattern (Expected)

The NEET 2027 exam pattern is expected to remain the same as 2026 - only the mode changes from OMR to CBT.

NEET 2027 CBT Exam Interface

The NEET 2027 CBT interface would be similar to the regular NTA test interface. Features to expect are:

  • Timer showing time remaining.
  • Colored palette of questions - Answered, Not Answered, Marked and Not Visited.
  • Buttons for Save & Next, Save & Mark for Review, and Clear Response.
  • Instant subject switching among Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology.
  • Review and submit screen before submitting.

Becoming familiar with this specific interface prior to the test day is the only CBT benefit possible - that’s why screen practice is so important.

Advantages and Disadvantages of NEET 2027 CBT Mode

Advantages

Challenges to prepare for

Edit answers anytime - no OMR bubbling errors

Screen fatigue over a 3-hour test

Stronger security - encrypted papers, minimal leak risk

Limited computer exposure for some rural aspirants

Faster, more accurate results

No physical underlining on passages

“Mark for Review” aids time management

Scrolling through long passages on screen

Consistent experience across all centres

Adapting to mouse-and-keyboard answering

Every challenge above is solvable with CBT mock-test practice. Lakhs of students already clear JEE Main, CUET and GATE in CBT mode - familiarity is the deciding factor.

NEET 2027 Exam Day Guidelines

  • Print your admit card from the NTA website.
  • Arrive at the centre well in advance - at least an hour before the exam begins.
  • Get cleared through security and identify yourself.
  • Sit at your designated seat / computer station.
  • Read the instructions displayed on screen prior to the timer starting.
  • Solve the exam, marking 'Mark for Review' appropriately.
  • Go through and submit before the timer runs out.

Bring only NTA-authorized items (admit card, government-issued photo ID, passport-sized photograph). No calculators/electronic gadgets are permitted.

How to Prepare for NEET 2027 CBT Mode

Concepts earn marks, but familiarity with the screen, its navigation, precision under pressure, and temperament on test day determine how effectively your concepts translate into marks on the test day. Take this phased approach to CBT preparation.

Phase 1 - Build Screen Comfort

  • Mock tests yourself using a computer, not paper.
  • Convert your practice questions and PYQs into a timed online test.
  • Slowly increase the time spent on the computer from small increments up to 3 hours.

Phase 2 - Master the CBT Interface

  • Practice extensively using the official NTA interface till all functions of the palette, navigating through and marking for review become second nature.
  • Learn changing answers and switching subjects till it requires no mental effort at all.

Phase 3 - Simulate the Real Exam

  • Practice timed three hour mocks in one shot at the expected NEET timings.
  • Practice across the morning and afternoon slots to be prepared for either shift.
  • Analyze each mock extensively after completion.
