Uses of Concave Lens

Lenses are quite relevant in our day to day lives and are useful in elevating our lifestyles as well as supporting in recovering from near-sightedness among people.

In this study, the major focus has been given to find out the uses of concave lenses in our day to day lives. Although, discussions are also conducted on convex lenses as they are quite interrelated to each other and show several properties that are effectively and successfully used by mankind. To better understand the notions of concave lenses we need to first understand what concave lenses look like. Delving into the study it is understood that concave lenses are those lenses that have one curved surface from inside, they are also known as “diverging lenses.” The concave lenses are round-shaped in the inward sides and bulge out at the edges.

Understanding concept of lenses in Physics

Understanding the concept of lenses becomes quite easiest once there becomes a proper idea of how the two major lenses like that constitute the concave as well as the convex lenses. It is noticed when light passes through the concave lenses, objects through the lenses look smaller and closer. That is the reason that concave lenses are used in daily life in treating patients with “near-sightedness”. On the other hand, the convex lenses look a bit different from the concave lenses, it looks thick in the middle and thinner in the upper and the lower edges. Moreover, the edges of the convex lenses are curved in nature. When light passes through the convex lenses the objects look bigger and are placed farther away. For this reason, these lenses are used in correcting farsightedness.

What are concave lenses?

Concave lenses are those lenses that help in diverging a ray of light coming from a stated source. This thereby forms an image that has the characteristics of virtual, diminished as well as upright images. The concave lenses can make both “virtual and real images”. Concave lenses are basically used in diverging the rays which are incident on the surface of the lenses. Several usages of the concave lenses in our daily lives that cater to telescopes, cameras, lasers, flashlights, and eyeglasses for treating people with a deficit in near-sightedness. These concave lenses are as well-known as “diverging lenses”. Several types of concave lenses are there that constitute equi-concave, diverging meniscus, bi-concave, plano-concave.

What are convex lenses?

Convex lenses are those lenses that converge the ray of light that is incident on the surface when conveying parallel to the principal axis. Moreover, it is also well noticed that the convex lenses majorly converge and therefore, these lenses are used in the instruments such as the microscope in the part of the eyepiece. In addition, these convex lenses are also used in magnifying glasses and also in projectors. Several types of convex lens present constitute equi-convex, converging meniscus, bi-convex and as well as plano-convex.

Uses of concave lenses

Several instances are evidenced that shows how widely the usage of concave lenses is imbibed into our daily lifestyles. Concave lenses are used as lasers in different types of instruments such as scanners, CD and DVD players. In several medical types of equipment, the usage of concave lenses is prominent.  Furthermore, in wearing glasses, concave lenses are used as well as cameras and flashlights. Peepholes also make use of concave lenses.

Difference between concave and convex lenses

Several notable and significant differences are noticed between concave and convex lenses. In concave lenses, the images follow the characteristics of small in size, virtual and upright. On the other hand, the images formed by the usage of the convex lenses show the characteristics of small and large in sizes. Concave and convex lenses have a real and a virtual focus respectively. The focal length of the concave and convex lenses are negative and positive respectively. However, the images developed in the concave and convex lenses are upright and inverted in nature. The surface of the concave lenses have an inward curve, on the other hand, convex lenses have spherical surfaces which are curved outwards. Concave and convex lenses are also known as diverging and converging lenses respectively.

Applications of concave and convex lenses

Applications of the concave lenses are majorly seen in the following.

  • Flashlights,
  • Glasses and Lasers
  • Cameras,
  • Peepholes, whereas,

Concave lenses are majorly used in the following,

  • Eyeglasses and Microscopes,
  • Magnifying glasses and Projectors,
  • Telescopes and Optical microscopes,
  • “Multi-junction solar cells” and many more.

Conclusion

In concluding the study, it is easily understood that the exploration has been made on the concept primarily associated with the concave lenses. Moreover, in the study, focus has also been given in effectively exploring both the major lenses and how they look. In addition to these, the mechanisms are between deals which shows how strikingly different both the lenses are in their application. The property and the characteristics of the images change gradually by passing through the concave and the convex lenses. Furthermore, within the study, application of these two lenses are focused on showing how they are effective in the usage of the daily life of humans. In addition to these, major differences that are noticed between the concave and the convex lenses are also catered to that supports in providing a better view that assists in easy understanding of the lenses.
