Learn About the Concept of Repeater

The device by which the signal's power is increased is called a Repeater. This article provides a detailed look at the concept of retransmitters and also learns about repeaters' functions.

Repeaters are the devices used to increase the power of the signal. Its function is to receive a signal and then transmit it. It helps in receiving the signals before they become weak. There are different types of repeaters classified depending upon their usage. They help in generating two-way communications. In this article, we will see about the concept of Repeater. Further, we will also read about the retransmitters. After that, we will look at the function of the Repeater and also will read about their types in detail.

Repeaters :

Repeaters are the devices that receive the fading signals and make them strong to be accessed. It has two ports. One port is Inlet for the signals, and the other is an outlet for transmission. Inlet is for receiving weak signals. The outlet is for transmitting the boosted or strong signal. It helps in broadcasting every bit of signal without any loss. It also helps in the propagation of broken or weak signals. Usually, repeaters work as receivers, amplifiers, and transmitters. Mang number of repeaters are used in the process of communication. It is for increasing the range of communication. An example of a repeater is the communication satellites of space. When a transmitter does not have a direct line of sight with the receiver, then a repeater is used. Repeaters establish a common point between these, i.e., receiver and transmitter. Before transmission, the carrier frequency of a signal is changed using these repeaters. Repeaters are often referred to as retransmitters. It is because they can both receive and then transmit the signals.

Types of Repeater:

Depending upon their usage, repeaters can be classified into many types. Some of them are listed below:

  • Radio Repeater – For establishing a two-way communication, repeaters are used. It receives a signal and then, after strengthening it, transmits it.
  • Telephone Repeater – This type of telephone repeater is used to increase the range of telephone lines. Usually, they are used in landline connections. A wide range of telephonic lines is established using repeaters. They are bilateral. They amplify the signal in both directions. They were developed between 1900- 1950. Because of them, large distance communication became possible.
  • Analog Repeater – In analogue signals, repeaters play a vital role. Its work is to amplify the signal and then transmit it to another receiver.
  • Digital Repeater – It transmits data in binary day signals. It helps in the recovery of losses over the medium. Its function is to receive a signal and then transmit it. It helps in receiving the signals before they become weak.
  • Optical Communication Repeater – Firstly, the light signals were converted into electronic signals, and then after conversion, they were transmitted. But with the use of optical communication repeaters, the light is itself amplified. Now the conversion is not needed.

Functions of Repeater:

A repeater’s work is to pick up a signal and then amplify it, and after the amplification, the signal gets ready to be transmitted. It changes the frequency of the carrier. Repeaters are the devices used to increase the power of the signal. Its function is to receive a signal and then transmit it. It helps in receiving the signals before they become weak. They help in generating two-way communications. Some of the specific functions of Repeater are listed below:

  • Repeaters are mainly used to retransmit the weak signals after making them strong.
  • Easy to be installed
  • They are not very costly. Therefore they are affordable.
  • It supports both types of signals, i.e., analogue and digital signals.
  • It also removes all the unwanted noises which come with signals.
  • Weaks signals are strengthened using it.
  • Helps in-network coverage over a larger area.
  • They help in generating two-way communications.
  • They establish a common point between both receiver and transmitter.
  • Before transmission, the carrier frequency of a signal is changed using these repeaters.
  • They extend the range of communication systems.
  • Conclusion :

Hence, repeaters are the devices by which a weak signal is strengthened. Repeaters help in the removal of unwanted noises. Often, distorted signals at the time of transmission are too repaired. Repeaters are easy to install and are code effective. In this article, we learned about the concepts of Repeaters. We also saw the working of different types of Repeater. Further, we learned about the functions of the repeaters. After reading this article, I hope all the concepts regarding repeaters will be clear.
