Being Indian citizens, we are provided with certain rights and duties that should be followed. Every citizen must follow the laws and carry out their legal obligations. A person must always be mindful of their fundamental duties. Eleven fundamental duties are stipulated in the Indian Constitution.

History

The Constitution was implemented in 1949, but it did not include the terms for fundamental duties. The Parliament of India not just comprehended the requirement to add fundamental duties in the Indian Constitution, but it moreover sensed that everyone should execute such duties. 

An innovative part, Part IVA, was added by the 42nd Amendment Act, 1976, which grants some fundamental duties that must be pursued by the citizens of India.  The fundamental duties were initially 10 in numbers except in 2002; the 86th Amendment raised its number to 11. Article 51-A affirms that it is the duty of every citizen of India:

  1. To value the Constitution, its principles and institutions, the National Flag and National Anthem
  2. The righteous ideas that motivate the national struggle to achieve independence, one should esteem them
  3. One should defend and support the sovereignty, unity and uprightness of India
  4. One should esteem the country and provide national service when called upon
  5. One should endorse harmony and the spirit of general brotherhood among the citizens of India, surpassing communal, linguistic, regional or sectional multiplicities and rejecting practices that are offensive to the dignity of the women.
  6. One should value and conserve the custom of our composite civilization
  7. One should defend and develop the natural environment comprising forests, lakes, rivers, wildlife, and a citizen should have consideration for living creatures
  8. One should not just expand the scientific character and humanism but moreover the strength of inquiry and transformation
  9. One should constantly defend public property and abjure violence
  10. One should at all times attempt towards excellence in all aspects of life and also for the collective activity so that the nation persists with its Endeavour and accomplishments
  11. One should always offer the prospect of education to his child or ward amid the age of six to fourteen years

Let’s discuss the Fundamental duty to ‘ABJURE VIOLENCE.’

Abjure meaning: Abjure implies to swear off, and it pertains to something you on one occasion considered. For example, one can abjure a religious belief, abjure another person’s affection, and abjure applying extreme force in interrogation.

Abjure meaning is a remarkable way to affirm your dismissal of something you once considered or believed. When we see its Latin origins, it makes sense: from ab- (connoting “away”) and jurare (“to pledge”). When one abjures something, they swear it away and detach them from it. One might abjure the regime of astrology after getting a bad fortune, or one might abjure matrimony after a harsh divorce.

What is violence?

Violence means applying physical force to harm, abuse, injure, or demolish. Other definitions are also employed, for violence meaninglike 

“The deliberate application of physical force or control, intimidated or genuine, against oneself, other person, or against a assemblage or society, which either leads to or has a high probability of resulting in damage, death, psychological injury, mal development, or dispossession.”

  • Environmental and Situational
  • Economical:
  • Familial and Personal Causes
  • Biological
  • Psychiatric and Psychopathological Causes

The 9th Fundamental Duty in the Indian Constitution asserts, for Indian citizens:

To safeguard public property and abjure violence – In the current society, violence has been a habitually and commonly utilized term. In the most contemporary cultured society, violence has happened to be a day to day matter. 

The tranquility and affluence of the society have been perturbed to a larger degree because of the incidence of violence in the society. 

It is regrettable that in a country that advocates non-violence to the entire world, we witness from time to time events of irrational violence and the destruction of public property. 

Amongst all the fundamental duties, this one grasps a great implication in the present scenario when strikes, protests, etc., have become common. It should be the duty of every Indian citizen to defend public property, abjure violence and maintain the nation’s integrity.
