The Indian Freedom Movement started from the Indian rebellion of 1857. It was a series of movements and events started by some important leaders of the Indian Freedom Movement to end British rule in India. The movement ended with its independence and partition in August 1947.
The Indian Independence Movement was a collective effort of numerous freedom fighters who fought for their country. They sacrificed their blood and even their soul for the country’s freedom from British rule. Numerous freedom fighters significantly contributed to making this movement a success and ending the rule of the British Government in India.
Revolutionaries in the Indian Freedom Movement
- Vasudev Balwant Phadke
Well-known as the ‘Father Of Indian Armed Rebellion,’ Vasudev Balwant Phadke is a name that cannot be missed when mentioning revolutionaries in the Indian Freedom Movement. He was one of the activists for India’s independence. Vasudev followed a revolutionary path to free India from British colonial rule. Seeing the farmer’s plight in the country made him believe that fighting for Swaraj was the only way to improve the situation of the farming communities. So, the revolutionary leader and Hindu sub-communities began a movement against British rule in India. Starting with an armed struggle, the movement launched raids to end the rule of the colonial Government. On a surprise attack, Vasudev caught colonial soldiers and, for a few days, attained control over Pune.
- Udham Singh
Known as Shaheed-i-Azam Sardar Udham Singh, Udhar Singh is best known for his revolutionary act of assassinating the former lieutenant governor of Punjab- Michael O’Dwyer. This revolutionary act by Udham Singh on March 13, 1940, was executed as revenge. Being an eyewitness of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre (1919), Udham Singh took revenge by assassinating O’Dwyer, responsible for the Massacre. This resulted in him being convicted of murder, and in July 1940, he was hanged by the British Government.
- Bhagat Singh
The name can never be forgotten when mentioning the revolutionaries in the Indian Freedom Movement. He participated in several movements and acts for the freedom of India. At the age of 23, Bhagat Singh was hanged by the British Government as he was convicted of killing John Saunders. His death left a long-lasting impact on the Indians and encouraged them to fight for their nation’s freedom.
- Shivaram Rajguru
A renowned Hindustan Socialist Republican Association member, Shivaram Rajguru was also a revolutionary in the Indian Freedom Movement. The only thing he aimed for was to achieve independence for his country.
As an associate of Sukhdev Thapar and Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru was also involved in the assassination of John Saunders. This act of the three revolutionaries was revenge for Lala Lajpat Rai’s death. While protesting against the Simon Commission, Lala Lajpat Rai was beaten by the police and died due to this. To avenge his death, Shivaram Rajguru and his two associates killed John Saunders.
- Sukhdev Thapar
He was a member of Naujawan Bharat Sabha and the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. Apart from organizing revolutionary cells in North India and Punjab, he was also one of the three revolutionaries who assassinated John Saunders, avenging Lala Lajpat Rai’s death.
- Chandra Shekhar Azad
Azad was disappointed due to the Non-cooperation Movement suspension in 1922. However, he soon became a revolutionary by joining a revolutionary organization- The Hindustan Republican Association. Being an active member of the association, he used to rob government properties to collect funds for the association. The assassination of J.P. Sauders, Kakori Train Robbery (1925), were some of his revolutionary acts. He is also known for his revolutionary act in 1929 to try to blow up the Viceroy of India’s train.
- Hemchandra Kanungo
One of the Anushilan Samiti members, Kanungo, was a well-known Indian revolutionary. Kanungo was one of the first Indian revolutionaries who travelled abroad to learn political and military training. He was also one of the co-accused in the Alipore Bomb Case (1908- 1909). Based on his learnings of picric acid bombs assembled from exiled revolutionaries of Russia, he started a secret bomb factory- Anusilonee Committee.

Ambedkar, and numerous others. These revolutionaries did everything to free their country from the rule of the Britishers with the Indian Freedom Movement 1857 to 1947.
The freedom fight of India was long and consistent. Still, these revolutionaries in the Indian Freedom Movement did not set themselves back and continued to fight for their country’s independence.
