Vernier calliper

In this article we are going to study Vernier Calipers, Its parts and its working principle. At last we are going to discuss some important questions related to it.It is a calibrated measuring instrument consisting of a main scale with a fixed jaw and a sliding jaw with an attached vernier.

A vernier calliper is a type of measuring instrument that is used to precisely determine linear measurements. In other words, it determines the length of a straight line between two places.

However, because the measuring jaws may be fixed on either side of the circumference, it is an extremely helpful instrument for measuring the diameter of round objects such as cylinders.

Vernier calliper overview

The vernier calliper is primarily used to determine an object’s interior and exterior dimensions. Caliper is a term that refers to any tool with two jaws that is used to measure the diameter of things.

In ancient China, during the Qin dynasty, the calliper was born without the commencement of scale (ad 9). In 1631, Pierre vernier of France invented a mechanism for obtaining the precise measurements essential for scientific studies.

The vernier calliper works on the idea that when two scales or divisions of slightly different size are employed, the difference between them is exploited to enhance the measurement’s precision.

The vernier caliper’s primary components are the following: 

  • Main scale
  • Vernier scale
  • Thumbscrew
  • Lock screw
  • Depth rod
  • Fixed jaw, and
  • Sliding jaw

Vernier caliper part description

Vernier callipers are made up of two steel rules that may move alongside one another.

One is a long rectangular metal strip with one end fitted with a fixed jaw. It is graded in inches at the top and centimetres at the bottom, and is referred to as the primary scale.

The primary scale is denoted by solid l-shaped frames on which cm graduates are split into twenty equal pieces, such that a little division equals 0.05 cm. This enables advancements in regularly used measurement techniques, such as direct measurement with the graduated line approach.

There is another tiny rectangular metal strip that is graduated differently than the main scale and is referred to as the vernier scale. It slips over the main scale and has a jaw identical to the main scale.

On a vernier calliper, there are two jaws: an upper jaw and a lower jaw. These jaws are used in conjunction to securely grasp the object while measuring its length, which is impossible with a metre scale.

External or lower jaws used to determine the diameter of a sphere or cylinder. Internal jaws or higher jaws used to determine the internal diameter of a hollow cylinder.

Additionally, the vernier callipers include a metal strip connected to the rear that is used to determine the interior depth of a cylinder.

Working principle

A scale cannot measure items smaller than 1mm, but a vernier calliper can. As previously stated, a vernier calliper contains two scales: the main scale and the vernier scale. When used in conjunction, this configuration allows for the measurement of extremely short lengths such as 0.1mm.

The main scale has a count of 1 mm, while the vernier scale has a count of 0.9mm. Thus, ten units of the main scale equal one centimetre, and ten units of the vernier scale equal 0.9mm.

The vernier scale is measured in millimetres. Thus, the difference between the main scale and the vernier scale, which is 0.1mm, is the vernier caliper’s operating principle.

Vernier caliper least count

The difference between the values of one main scale division and one vernier scale division is referred to as the vernier’s least count.

The least count of a vernier calliper is the smallest value that this gadget can measure. To get the vernier caliper’s least count, divide the value of one main scale division by the total number of divisions on the vernier scale.

Assume that one division on the main scale is 1 mm and the total number of divisions on the vernier scale is 10, the least count will be 0.1mm. Thus, the lowest count is defined as the shortest distance that an instrument can measure.

Errors

Vernier caliper zero error

The zero error in a vernier calliper is a mathematical mistake that occurs when the vernier scale’s zero does not correspond with the main scale’s zero.

In other words, if the vernier scale’s zero mark does not correspond with the main scale’s zero mark, the error is referred to as zero error. They are classified into three categories.

  1. No zero error
  2. Positive zero error
  3. Negative zero error

  1. Flat edge vernier caliper
  2. Knife edge vernier caliper
  3. Vernier gear tooth caliper
  4. Vernier depth gauge
  5. Flat and knife edge vernier caliper
  6. Vernier height gauge
  7. Vernier dial caliper

Uses of the vernier calliper

Vernier calipers are primarily used to determine the distance between two opposed edges of a surface. A vernier calliper may be used to measure an object’s interior and exterior dimensions, as well as its height, with an accuracy of up to one tenth of a millimetre.

A Vernier Caliper is a measurement and planning instrument. The major jaw measures exterior dimensions, the smaller jaw interior dimensions, and the stem measures depth. Mechanical engineering, aerospace, steel and car industries; forestry and handicrafts; science and medical.
