JEE Main 2026 Preparation: Question Papers, Solutions, Mock Tests & Strategy Unacademy » JEE Study Material » Mathematics » Volume of Cylinder

Volume of Cylinder

The overall article is written on the topic of “volume of cylinder”. This topic is very important in general to everyone. The main topic will be discussed through proper assessment of different subtopics.

Table of Content
  •

The capacity of a cylinder would be its volume, which indicates the quantity of the materials it could really hold and how much of the substances could be immersed into it. The formula which is used for calculating the volume of the cylinder is πr2h, in which r denotes the radius of the cylinder’s circular base whereas h denotes the height of the cylinder. The material can be any substance of any kind which could be uniformly used to fill the cylinder.

CYLINDER

A cylinder having a base in the shape of a circle and a three-dimension is called a cylinder. The cylinder is generally made up of circular discs piled on top of each other. Consider a situation in which one needs to figure out how much sugar could be stored inside a box in shape of a cylinder. In the other words, if one wants to figure out how much space this box has. The capacity of a cylinder involved measures the efficiency of such a spherical box. As a result, every volume of  such three-dimensional form equals the total space it takes up.

VOLUME OF THE CYLINDER

The collection of numerous congruent disks stacked one over the other is seen in a cylinder. While calculating the space which is occupied by the cylinder, first we have to calculate the space that is occupied by each disk, and then we have to sum them up. Therefore, the cylinder’s volume could be calculated by doing the product of the cylinder’s base area and its height.

In any cylinder radius is denoted by “r” and the height is denoted by “h”, so the volume of the cylinder would be base times its height.

Therefore, volume of the cylinder with the radius of its base “r” and its height

 “h” = the area of its base x its height of its cylinder. As its base is in shape of the circle, volume is written as:-

Volume = πr2 × h

Therefore, the cylinder’s volume = πr2h units cube

Example:-

Calculate volume of the cylinder in which the height is given as 20 cm and the radius of the base is given as 14 cm. (value of pi = 22/7)

Given in the question:

Height (h) = 20 cm

Radius (r) = 14 cm

It is known that the:

Volume of the cylinder, v = πr2h cube units

V = (22/7) x 14 x 14 x 20

Therefore, v = 12320 cm3

Therefore, the cylinder’s volume = 12320 cm3

CONCLUSION

As discussed before, a cylinder could be seen when the circles are kept one over the other. When the circle’s breadth has length as its unit, then the cylinder’s height would be the same as the total number of the circles. The volume of the cylinder’s formula is shown as:

           Volume = length x breadth x height

  • Volume = area of its surface x height

Whereas the area of the surface = length x breadth

Now for the cylinder, the surface area will be equal to its area of its base (circle)

Therefore volume of the cylinder formula = area of its circular base x its height

                                                                    =   πr2h

How can we find the height of the cylinder?

Ans : If the volume and the radius of the cylinder are given ...Read full

Ans :  A cylinder is defined as a hollow cylinder that is empty from the inside and it also has variation between the internal radius and the external radius. The bottom of the hollow cylinder also resembles a circular ring. To put it another way, the bottom of the hollow cylinder resembles a zone enclosed by two circular patterns. If the height of the hollow cylinder is given along with both its outer radius and inner radius, then the formula for the hollow cylinder’s volume is:-

Ans :  It is known that the cylinder’s volume is the base area x the height =  units cube.

“r” denotes the radius while the “h” denotes the cylinder’s height. Therefore, the hollow cylinder’s volume could be calculated by deducting the inner cylinder’s volume from the exterior cylinder’s volume. The hollow cylinder’s volume could be computed by: The hollow cylinder’s volume with the outer radius “R” and the inner radius “r” and the height “h” – the volume of the cylinder with the radius “r” and the height “h”.

Ans : If the volume and the radius of the cylinder are given

First of all, we have to make sure that the units of the volume and the radius is same for example cm3 or cm and the radius is in the unit’s radians. Then we have to square the radius and then finally we have to divide its volume by its radius squared and the pi to get its height in similar units as its radius.

  1. If the surface area and radius of the cylinder are given?

First of all we have to make sure that the units of its surface and the radius are the same and the radius is in radians. Then we have to reduce 2πr² from its surface area. Then we have to divide the outcome of step 1 by  2πr. Therefore, the outcome is the cylinder’s height.
