Coordinate Plane

In this article, we will learn about the coordinate plane, points in the coordinate plane, introduction to the coordination plane.

A vertical line known as the y-axis as well as a horizontal line known as the x-axis intersect to produce a two-dimensional plane known as a coordinate plane. The origin is the point at which these perpendicular lines join each other at zero.

A Coordinate Plane: What Is It?

Two number lines combine to form a two-dimensional surface known as a coordinate plane. It is created when the origin, a point where the X- and Y-axes coincide, is crossed by a horizontal line. Points are located using the numbers on a coordinate grid. You can graph points, lines, and many other things using a coordinate plane. It serves as a map & provides clear directions between two points.

Define Coordinate Plane

The following is a definition of a coordinate plane: The intersection of the Y-axis, a vertical line, and the X-axis, a horizontal line, creates a coordinate plane, also referred to as a rectangular coordinate plane grid.

Graph of a Coordinate Plane

A coordinate graph, also known as a coordinate plane, is made up of two parallel number lines, or axes, that represent the coordinates.

Coordinates

Coordinates are a pair of numbers that identify a specific point on a coordinate plane, often known as a grid of coordinates. The ordered pair (x, y), which corresponds to the X-coordinate and the Y-coordinate, is expressed in parenthesis and is used to identify a point in a coordinate plane. These coordinates may be zero, negative, or positive.

Quadrants on a coordinate plane:

  • A quadrant is an area or section of a cartesian or coordinate plane that results from the intersection of two axes
  • x > 0, y > 0, first quadrant
  • X 0, Y > 0 in the second quarter
  • Fourth quadrant: x > 0, y <0.
  • x > 0 and y 0 in the fourth quadrant

A Point’s Position on the Coordinate Plane

Let’s talk about how to identify points on a coordinate plane now that we are already familiar with the coordinate plane and its components. Follow the instructions below to find a point on the coordinate plane:

Step 1: Find the point.

Step 2: Determine the quadrant by examining the X and Y coordinates’ signatures.

Step 3: Count the units the point is to the right or left of the origin along the X-axis to determine its X-coordinate or abscissa.

Step 4: Count the number of units the point is above or below the origin along the Y-axis to determine the ordinate, also known as the Y-coordinate.

To find a point on the coordinate plane, follow the instructions below and the figure.

Step1: Observe the blue dot on the coordinate graph.

Step 2: It is located in the second quarter.

Step 3: Along the negative X-axis, the point is 3 units from the origin.

Step 4: Along the positive Y-axis, the point is 2 units from the origin.

Making a Coordinate Plane for Point Plotting:

We will learn how to plot a point on the coordinate plane in this part. Consider the following example: point P = (5, 6). Follow the instructions below to plot a point on the coordinate plane:

Step 1: First, draw the X-axis and the Y-axis, two perpendiculars.

Step 2:  is to begin from the beginning. Move along the positive X-axis 5 units to the right.

Step 3: Along the positive Y-axis, advance 6 units.

Mark the intersection’s location in step four. Label it as (5, 6).

Notably, P is located in the first quadrant. Additionally, because the values of both coordinates for any point in this quadrant will be positive, this is known as the “positive coordinate plane.”

Important Coordinate Plane Points:

  • The Roman number I stands for the first quarter (+, +), sometimes known as the positive coordinate’s quadrant
  • The Roman numeral II stands for the second quadrant (-, +)
  • The Roman numeral III stands for the third quadrant (-, -)
  • The Roman numeral IV stands for the fourth quarter (+, -)
  • Any point’s coordinates are included in brackets

Conclusion:

A coordinate plane, as you might recall from pre-algebra, is a two-dimensional number line where the vertical line is known as the y-axis and the horizontal line as the x-axis. These lines cross at their zero points and are perpendicular. The origin is where we get our name. The plane is divided into four quadrants by the axes.

To graph a point, a dot is placed at the coordinates of the ordered pair. Always begin at the beginning when possible. You may find out how many steps you need to travel to the right (positive) or left using the x-coordinate (negative). Additionally, the y-coordinate indicates how many steps are required to travel up (positive) or down (negative).

You do the reverse to determine a point’s coordinates in a coordinate system. Start at the point, then move up or down a vertical line until you reach the x-axis. Your x-coordinate is shown there. To get the y-coordinate, repeat the previous step while adhering to a horizontal line.

An ordered pair set is known as a relation. The domain refers to the first coordinate, which is typically the x-coordinate, and the range refers to the second coordinate, which is typically the y-coordinate. The range contains values that correspond to the dependent variable, while the domain contains values that relate to the independent variable, if you recall from prior chapters.
