Who Can Apply for GATE Exam 2027?

The response to that question is contingent on two factors:
1. What degree or programme are you pursuing?
2. Which year or semester of that programme are you currently in?

Candidates can generally apply if they fall into one of the following groups:

• Students currently in the 3rd year or higher of an eligible undergraduate programme
• Final-year students of an Eligible degree
• Candidates who have already completed an eligible degree
• Students pursuing Eligible postgraduate programmes such as M.Sc., M.A. or MCA
• Candidates enrolled in integrated or dual-degree programmes that are eligible for the examination.
• Certain students who are enrolled with B.Sc., B.A., B.Com. or BCA courses/ programmes have been considered.
• Eligible students of the fields of medical education, pharmacy, and agriculture.
• Professionals who are already enrolled in a feasible programme.
• Candidates with a valid qualification from outside India.

A student does not need to wait until graduation to take the GATE.

GATE Eligibility for Final-Year Students

Final-year students are allowed to apply for GATE 2027.

A person does not need to wait until the degree certificate is given to appear for the exam.

For example:

Priya is in the year of B.Tech Civil Engineering and will finish her course in 2027.

GATE 2027 status: Eligible.

Her eligibility, for an M.Tech programme or PSU will depend on whether she meets the requirements of that organisation by the given deadline

GATE Eligibility Criteria for Diploma Students

This is one of the confusing parts of the GATE eligibility rules.

There is a difference between:

Diploma only and Diploma followed by B.E./B.Tech. Through entry.

Case 1: Candidate Has Only a Diploma

A standalone Diploma in Engineering or Technology is not considered an eligible degree for appearing in GATE 2027.

So finishing a Polytechnic or Engineering Diploma does not by itself make someone eligible for GATE.

Case 2: Diploma and Lateral-Entry B.Tech/B.E.

A person with a Diploma who then joins a B.E./B.Tech. Program through entry can become eligible.

GATE Eligibility Criteria for B.Sc. Students

Eligible B.Sc. candidates can also appear for GATE

However, students must understand an important distinction.

A B.Sc. A student being eligible to write a GATE paper does not automatically mean that every M.Tech programme accepts a three-year B.Sc. as its qualifying degree.

Always check the admission criteria of the target programme separately.

GATE Eligibility Criteria for BCA Students

BCA is also included in the official degree-
For a standard three-year BCA programme:

2nd year: Not yet eligible
3rd year: Eligible
BCA completed: Eligible

Can BCA Students Give GATE CS?

A BCA candidate who satisfies the overall GATE eligibility requirements may choose a GATE paper according to the official paper-selection rules.

However, the candidate should separately confirm whether the target M.Tech/MS programme accepts a BCA degree and the selected GATE paper.

This distinction matters because:

Eligibility to write GATE CS does not automatically equal eligibility for every M.Tech CSE programme.

GATE Eligibility for M.Sc., M.A. and MCA Students

Candidates pursuing an eligible M.Sc., M.A. or MCA programme do not need to wait until the third year.

The official eligibility table permits candidates who are:

• currently in the 1st year or higher, or
• have already completed the qualifying programme.

Example : An MCA first-year student satisfying the prescribed degree requirements can appear for GATE 2027.

Candidates do not need to upload their Class 10, Class 12, UG or PG marksheets to DigiLocker for the GATE examination registration process.

GATE Eligibility for Working Professionals

Working professionals can apply for GATE.

GATE does not prescribe:

• a maximum age for appearing;
• compulsory work experience;
• a limit on the number of attempts;
• a restriction based on how long ago the candidate graduated.

Example : A Mechanical Engineer completed B.Tech in 2015 and has been working for 11 years.

If the degree satisfies the GATE academic requirements:

Can the candidate appear for GATE 2027? Yes.

The candidate should separately check PSU age requirements if the goal is recruitment.

Can Students With Backlogs Appear for GATE

The official GATE examination eligibility rules look at the candidates qualifying programme. They also consider the required stage of study. Importantly they do not list an existing backlog as a separate general disqualification, for appearing in the examination.

So a student who otherwise meets the degree and studies‑stage conditions should check the latest application rules. If those rules are met, that student can apply accordingly.

However backlogs can become important after GATE.

An IIT NIT, IISc or PSU may require the candidate to complete the qualifying degree. They may also require the candidate to achieve marks or to submit final documents by a particular deadline.

So remember:

GATE examination eligibility and final admission or recruitment eligibility are checks.

GATE 2027: Final Summary

GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras. Eligible candidates can apply from the prescribed year of study, with no age limit and no attempt limit.

A valid GATE score can be used for IIT, NIT, IIIT and other PG admissions, and for PSU recruitment where accepted.
